Historic New Castle Day last Saturday went well, lots of activities, Colonial troops in uniform, people in 18th and 19th Century  costumes strolling around town, but today it was quiet. New Jersey is visible in the distance in these scenes taken in Battery Park, so named for the hill which once held a gun battery to protect the town from pirates, who plagued New Castle, so they say. Between 1926 and 1951, a ferry operated across the river just north of this point and crossing into Pennsville, New Jersey.  It ran until the first of the Delaware Memorial Bridges opened in 1951. But today, a different type of activity was being carried out by a man from Wilmington and his daughter. Every Thursday, winter or summer, they visit the park. The man, who says his name is Ozzie, brings his harmon...

Old New Castle was the colonial capital of Delaware, and after the capital was moved to Dover during the Revolutionary War, it was the seat of New Castle County. Today it is a town with an elite historic district containing several house museums and an historic hexagonal library designed in 1892 by the famous Philadelphia architect, Frank Furness.                  Fans of Old New Castle received good news this week. There had been worries that the traditional third Saturday in May Day in Old New Castle event, with homes and museums usually open to the public, had been cancelled.  An alliance of the New Castle Visitors Bureau and the Historic New Castle Alliance will sponsor Historic New Castle  Day on May 15, 2010.  It is planned to be similar to the past event, and this year the New Ca...

In a previous posting, we learned how J. S. Cornell & Son of Cherry St. in Philadelphia were restoring a Palladian window in the c. 1800 George Read II House in New Castle, Delaware. They were installing J-channel weatherstripping on the sides of the window. For residential installations, they do not use this type of weatherstripping on the bottom of windows, but a spring-type weatherstripping so there is no danger of bending it with frequent use.                  Next we see Mr. Shainline attaching a piece of cotton sash cord to the window weight. (see Historic Window Guide--The Anatomy of a Double Hung Window for definition of terms in previous posting). Cotton is used to ensure the sash pocket lets the weight move freely, and care is made not to nail through the cord when assembling ...

Cornell Homes, Making Buyers and Lendors trust in them!   Cornell Homes is definitely headed to becoming the number 1 builder in the Tr-State area.  In a time when the lending industry is pulling back, that is certainly not the case with Cornell Homes.  Not so long ago, when the company was founded by Greg Lingo, banks were not that receptive to him.  One bank in particular took to working with him (Omni Bank of Atlanta), and now all the banks are excited to work with him.  The reason is quite simple, build a great home and put a great price on it.  But that alone is not enough.  The buying public must see value in it, which they do!  All over the Tri-state area.  Sales are exploding, and Cornell Homes announced they are starting 3 new projects.  The Village of Twin Lakes in Newark wil...

We had the rare opportunity last week to watch the re-installation of a restored Palladian window at a house museum in Old New Castle, Delaware.  The George Read II House was built around 1800 by the son of a signer of the Declaration of Independence. This window is at the end of the hall on the second floor and has a view of the Delaware River. The property is owned by the Delaware Historical Society. The work is being done by Dale Frens of Frens & Frens Architects under the Save America's Treasures program. The contractor is J. S. Cornell & Son of Cherry St. in Philadelphia.  In the picture above, you can see the Project Manager, William H. Shainline, who is explaining the work as it is being done. Here, we see Chris Capaldi and Efrain Matos getting ready to nail metal weatherstrippi...

The original capitol city of Delaware, Historic Old New Castle, DE is a beautiful colonial riverfront town. It was established in 1651 and it is also where William Penn landed. It was originally settled in 1651 under Peter Stuyvesant with the Dutch West India Company. It was then captured by the Swedish in 1654 and was recaptured the very next year by the Dutch. In 1664 the British took over and that's when it became New Castle. Eventually this land was conveyed to William Penn. This transfer was contested by Lord Baltimore and the boundary disputes were settled by Mason-Dixon who if course were made famous by the Mason-Dixon line running at the south border of Pennsylvania and the western border of Delaware. Historic Old New Castle, DE still closely resembles what it was like in those ...
