One Act Play Festival at Mount Pleasant High School As the polar vortex releases its stranglehold on Delaware, people will be emerging from their homes. PERFECT timing! Tonight is the opening night of the One Act Play Festival at Mount Pleasant High School! This marks the second year that Chris, Turner, the Director of the MPHS Drama Department, has provided the opportunity for students to step up and direct the One Act plays. By design, one acts are shorter than a regular play, so they are a great way for students with the desire and talent, to learn the ropes of directing. Three plays fill the bill. Written by different screenwriters, they each lend a different tone to the night. Student directors were allowed to choose their own plays, with the approval of Turner. And though he seeks...

Solar power is good, right?  Unless you have wings made of wax and feathers, as in the Greek myth of Icarus, the man of little hubris, who flew too close to the sun with disastrous effect.    Or unless you are an architect designing glass towers with concave surfaces. Now we have a present day example in The Guardian newspaper of a mash up in London architecture, with a new glass covered building. The architect of the Walkie Talkie building in London has admitted that he predicted it might reflect hot sun rays to the street below, but "didn't realize it would be so hot."       The concave shape of the building was channelling the sun’s rays into a concentrated beam onto Eastcheap, capable of singeing carpets, blistering paintwork and even melting parts of a car's bodywork. One cafe in...

Song title: This Ole' House   Theme: The life cycles of an old house   This ole house once knew his children This ole house once knew his wife This ole house was home and comfort As they fought the storms of life This old house once rang with laughter This old house heard many shouts Now he trembles in the darkness When the lightnin' walks about     When the public asks me for help:   This ole house once knew his children This ole house once knew his wife This ole house was home and comfort As they fought the storms of life This old house once rang with laughter This old house heard many shouts Now he trembles in the darkness When the lightnin' walks about     Here's where I tell them what they need to do to get the house ready for market:   This ole house is afraid of thunder This ol...

The Hale Byrnes House, an 18th Century historic home (now a residence and museum) of a Quaker miller was the center of a small settlement on the Christina River. Curator Kim Burdick spins tales of how the Byrnes family came to settle in Stanton, Delaware and how life was disrupted for this miller and his neighbors when George Washington decided to hold a war council at the house, AND to take all the provisions the community had stored up for the winter to feed the Continental army. A story is told of a seance in recent years when Mrs. Byrnes (through someone attending) demands a portrait of Washington be removed.  It was done posthaste. Saturday, this historic home in Stanton, Delaware, was the location of an open house featuring music, a display of antique lighting implements, and lots...

Ever tried a terducken?  That’s the chicken inside a duck inside a turkey monstrosity of food.  I never have had this, although it doesn’t sound like it might not taste good, just a lot of trouble to make.    Well, here is a new Thanksgiving dessert that would have made the Pilgrims and Indians turn over in their graves.  Cherpumple.  That’s right, you heard it here. A  cherry pie baked inside a white cake layered over a pumpkin pie inside a yellow cake, layered with an apple pie baked inside a spice cake. Lucky for the Pilgrims, they couldn’t pop down to the supermarket and buy store bought pies and cake mixes. Fasten your dining room seat belts, here are the crazy instructions from Charles Phoenix.

It is with a sad heart that I read the following letter that came in the mail today, although I knew it was coming. The Friends of Rockwood had raised $100,000 for the repair of the conservatory roof (bottom right at Christmas) to be matched by New Castle County, the owners of the Rockwood Museum. However the County Executive stated that since the Friends were not going to pay union wages, the money could not be accepted. There was some controversy over whether the unions forced this conclusion. Then the County CAO rudely clashed with a long-time Friends member, got her banned from the grounds, and, well---you know this had to end badly, and not for the men in power in the County. Thus, the letter below. (Other pictures below are of the Lodge on the grounds of the Rockwood Museum).     ...

Albertson Park continues to be a popular single family housing choice with a great location and relatively stable home prices and sales activity. Albertson Park is a nice single family development of over 150 properties. Designs range from smaller approximately 1600 sqft ranches to larger 2 story colonials with over 1900 sqft. Construction began in 1960 and continued through 1965. Located adjacent to Faulkland Heights, it is an ideal location for anyone needing access throughout New Castle County. As we have often seen throughout the county, Albertson Park home sales activity and pricing peaked in 2007 with 6 sales averaging $232,000. Since 2008 prices have fallen from an average of $229,000 to a low of $185,000 in 2011. Prices jumped a bit in 2012 to $204,000 but sales fell to 2 homes....

If anyone wondered where your Civic Association dues go, we had a great example of our community spirit this Saturday. Thanks to our enthusiastic Activities Chair, Chastity Rouse, we had games, face painting, a moon bounce, and a very nice selection of goodies from a food truck. There were doubters saying we have never done this before, but although it has been many years, there have been street parties and Halloween parades in the past, but nothing that I can remember with catered food.  So we can thank the weather gods for the nice day for our event, and that we didn't have to use our money for snow plowing last winter. Maybe if it doesn't snow (much) this winter, we can throw another party next year!  Go South Graylyn Crest!  Looking for a home for sale in South Graylyn Crest?  ...

While looking for tickets to the Gilbert & Sullivan Society of Chester County, I found this link from the Mikado. Attention politicians: None of you will be missed--I've got a little list!   It seems this is not a new problem, either here or in Gilbert & Sullivan land (England), where it was originally performed in 1885.

What a treat it was to visit the site on the Seventh Street Peninsula on the Christina River in Wilmington and see the work the Challenge Program has done restoring an 1889 Jackson and Sharp railcar originally made right here in Wilmington. This nonprofit helps at-risk youth transition into the work world by offering skilled trades opportunities. While only 10% of the wood on this Jackson and Sharp railcar is original, 90% of the hardware has been preserved, including the wheel "trucks" which will eventually move the car out of the workshop and on to the riverfront to join the Kalmar Nyckel, a reproduction of the ship that brought the original Swedish settlers to Wilmington.  Below, clerestory windows for the rail car are being re-created based on a shar...
