Goodstay is a historic tudor-style garden located on the grounds of the University of Delaware's Goodstay Center at 2600 Pennsylvania Avenue in Wilmington.  Of course, eons ago, when I was a student at UD, I never ventured outside the classrooms in this lovely circa 1740 Historic Home to see the gardens--class schedules were hectic and I had small children waiting at home.    Now that I have more time, and more time to learn about gardens, I have grown to enjoy visiting the grounds and was a guest there at an event held by the Delaware Center for Horticulture. Today, I visited the 80th Annual Wilmington International Exhibition of Photography at Arsht hall, next door to Goodstay Center. This gave me time to stroll through the gardens, thanks to The Friends of Goodstay Gardens. This vol...

Wilmington, Delaware is the proud home of one of the winners of the 2013 Preservation Achievement Grand Jury Awards, recognized annually by the Preservation Alliance for Greater Philadelphia. Preservation Alliance Interim Executive Director Suzanna Barucco commented that,  "From mapping a historic landscape to preserving established institutions, to adaptively reusing a 20th century landmark, these projects enhance the quality of life in our communities, and demonstrate the important role that historic preservation plays in the economy of the Philadelphia region. The Sacred Heart Oratory Bell Tower at 917 N. Madison Street, remains from a parish dedicated in 1875 for the City's German Roman Catholic Community. Then, in the 1970s, Interstate 95 bisected the parish, and attendance at Sun...

Homes which have sold in the popular Brandywine Hundred neighborhood of South Graylyn Crest in the last six months have averaged $261,333, with 9 homes selling for prices ranging from $325,000 down to $185,000. This wide range in a community where homes are either 3 or 4 bedrooms shows that some homes have not been updated from the 1950's, while others have been given all the modern bells and whistles in the way of desirable updates.   .      Looking at a period from January 2012 to July of that year, we find that 6 homes sold in the South Graylyn Crest area of Brandywine Hundred, with an average price of $251,367. The Low price was $227,000, and the high price was $272,900, showing that this group of houses did not have the extreme range that the last 6 months brought.  There are curre...

The Friends of Independence National Historical Park speaker series will present Mr. Joe Becton speaking on Africans and the Big Three Documents on February 19 at 7 PM. Even though Africans were not participants in the important "meetings" that created the three most important documents in our country, they did create a presence in the documents. Mr. Becton's presentation will review the documents to see their impact on Liberty, Freedom and Independence and will include discussion of the construction of the City and African Education. It will be held at the Second Bank of the United States, 425 Chestnut St., Philadelphia. More information here. This should be a good talk--Discover the Extraordinary Secret Lives of Everyday Trees, with Nancy Ross Hugo. The talk will be at the Delaware Center for Horticulture in Trolley Square at 1810 N. Dupont Street in Wilmington, Delaware on Wednesday, February 6, from 7-8 PM.  The talk is the first in the Series of four winter lectures sponsored by the Delaware Grounds Management Association. The first talk is sponsored by Kerns Brothers Tree Service (who did a great job trimming my trees this fall, and gave me the DCH members' discount).  A complete schedule of talks and other activities is available. Nancy will share secrets she and photographer Robert Llewellyn discovered in a two year investigation of seeds, cones, catkins, resting buds, emerging leaves, and other small tree phenomena. T...

I can’t believe it that there are almost 30 venues open this Friday evening for an event I look forward to every month, “Art on the Town"! There are 6 galleries open in the Trolley Square area of the City of Wilmington, and 13 more a few blocks away in Downtown Wilmington (including at the Grand Opera House on Market Street, left). For February, also included are outlying areas such as Old New Castle (3 galleries), Greenville (3 galleries), and 1 each in Bellefonte , Claymont, and Arden. For a complete list of galleries, hours, who has free food and/or drink, and entertainment, see the brochure posted by the City of Wilmington. I take pleasure in the relaxed atmosphere of these gallery jaunts, especially since I no longer have the responsibility for reviewing the openings for "Art Matt...

This is a day all Americans can be proud of--and we in Delaware can claim a spot on that stage. After all, the newly sworn in Vice President lives just down the road! Note: Delaware is really small, and he’s here with Dr. Biden when he’s in town and not at the Vice-Presidential residence on the grounds of the Naval Observatory in Washington. I can remember when his boys played in the YMCA Soccer League during the same period when my 2 boys were also playing. And when the Wilmington Amtrak station was re-named the Joseph R. Biden, Jr. Amtrak Station in May of 2011, his whole family stood behind him and proudly beamed. When the newly elected Obama and Biden did a Whistle-Stop Tour 4 years ago, this memorable poster was sponsored by the Friends of the Furness Railroad District (plug: I'm o...

Hot Tub Removal Wilmington Delaware Demo And Haul Away Rubbish Removal Delaware Junk Removal removed a old hot tub from a home in Wilmington Delaware today.  This project was a little more complicated than our normal removal because the only way to remove the hot tub was by the basement that had front and rear access.  We had to cut the tub into small enough pieces then carry it through the small basement doors.  Below are a few photos before, during and after we took the hot tub away.   At Delaware Junk Removal we remove anything from anywhere!

I had a chance to drive down Market Street in downtown Wilmington, Delaware last night when I attended a talk at the Delaware Historical Society, and found some fascinating sights. Market Street still had twinkling lights in the trees, the 1871 Grand Opera House had dramatic lighting (I missed the light show last week that took place on the facade), Orillas Tapas Bar had relocated to an old bank at Ninth and Market and the front of the building was well lit and a lively scene looked like it was taking place inside.          (L. to R. Orillas, Grand Opera House, City/County Building, view south on Market Street from Ninth St.) The old City-County Building on Rodney Square, which had been bought by MBNA, and never occupied by them before they left town, was lighted and restored for...
