The Big Catch - Fresh Florida Seafood My husband and his friend went flat fishing today from Hernando Beach, Florida.  Just like any good fishermen they will not reveal the exact location and it will remain a secret.  His big of catch of the day; however, is not.  Here he is proudly holding his big catch of the day - a Redfish!  It became dinner tonight.      Waterfront living is a lifestyle.  Hernando Beach is a residential boating and fishing community located just North of Tampa on the Gulf of Mexico. From here you may go flat fishing, deep sea fishing or even scalloping.  Redfish is just one variety of fish you might catch.  Grouper, Mackerel, Seatrout, Shark, Bluefish and many others depending on season and fisherman's luck could just be your big catch! If you are interested in wat...

Florida Nature:  Ready to Leave the Nest Children will grow up and leave home just like this young Osprey that is soon ready to leave the nest. Ospreys are a common sight in our waterfront community of Hernando Beach but they can be found all across Florida with its long coastlines and many other bodies of water such as lakes and rivers.  You can often observe Ospreys flying high with their prey - always a fresh catch of fish - in their talons.  The call of an Osprey is an unmistakingly high pitch shriek.  Ospreys are also quite territorial, I've have often watched our "resident" Osprey in Hernando Beach to chase off an intruder after a few short warning calls.  This nest will be empty soon but the Osprey parents will return next season to the same nest site to start a new family.     H...

Sunday Photo Shot:  Knobby Knees with a Beak.. If you've known me for a while, you know that birdwatching is one of my favorite pastimes.  Birding opportunities in Florida abound, but best of all, I am able to observe and photograph many different birds right in my own front or backyard in Hernando Beach, Florida.   No wonder then, that birds are some of my favorite objects to capture with my camera.  It wasn't any different with this shot, a different perspective of the majestic Sandhill Crane that spent several hours in front of my house digging for grubs and other delicacies.  He didn't seem to mind me much, only once making a quiet rattling sound from deep within its throat. He's all knobby knees with a beak... don't you agree?

Just Before the Rain - Storm Clouds over Hernando Beach, Florida Summer time in Florida is the "rainy season" as my old mother-in-law used to say.  Well, after several years of drought conditions, this year the rainy season in Florida seems to have made a come back.  We've been blessed almost daily with rain storms go on for an hour or so in the late afternoon or early evening hours. Tonight is no different.  After gathering and organizing clouds, gaining strength throughout the day, the storm is moving in.  While the sun is setting at the horizon, rolling thunder can be heard in the distance and dark storm clouds blanketing the skies over Hernando Beach, Florida.  Soon the rain will start.

Good news for waterfront home owners and buyers of waterfront properties!  Passed by Congress on July 2, 20123, the Flood Insurance Reform Act of 2012 was signed by the President on July 6, 2012 to extend the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) through September 30, 2017.   Prior to this five-year extension, the flood insurance program had been extended every few months and even was allowed to lapse twice since 2008 much to the distress of waterfront home sellers and buyers when closings could not proceed because flood insurance could not be obtained in a timely manner.  FEMA applauds the extension of the National Flood Insurance Program  and you can find much more flood-related information on their website. There are currently over 2 million flood insurance policies in force in the...

In Hernando Beach, Florida, we were blessed with some liquid sunshine today... some nice rain showers came down on us throughout the day, not too hard but enough to water lawns and plants the natural way.    As it happens so many times, at then end of the day, the sun came out just in time to set.  But sometimes it is worth to take a look into a different direction.  Turning away, this was the view that developed opposite the sunset! With some rain drops still falling out of the sky, the waning sunlight rewarded us with this stunning rainbow over Hernando Beach framing the massive cloud turned pink below!  What a beauty, don't you agree?   Rainy Days do have Rewards...

Hernando Beach Dredge Project Completed Waterfront living in Hernando Beach, Florida, has just gotten better!  With the Hernando Beach Dredge project nearly completed, boaters can now look forward to using a channel out to the Gulf of Mexico that is deeper and wider.  When first proposed, the Hernando Beach dredge project had some challenges to overcome that included issues such as permitting issues, spoil disposal, and sea grass preservation just to name a few.  Hernando County recently announced that the final surveys of the channel have been approved by the County Engineer.  For all practical purposes, the dredge is completed and all that is left to do by the dredge contractor is cleanup and restoration of the sites where materials and equipment were loaded and stored. With the compl...
