Winter Day Bird Watching in Florida When it gets really cold up North, we too, can feel the cold creeping into Florida. Today is one of those sunny but chilly days that have you bundled up at least as far as Floridians are concerned or that have you just stay indoors eating hot chili and the heat or fire place on. When it comes to birds however, it's a different story. As I was looking out my window in Hernando Beach for something interesting to see, I noticed this pair of Hooded Merganser ducks happily swimming and diving in the saltwater canal behind the house. We typically have quite a few of Mallards in Hernando Beach all year round but these ducks looked quite different with their puffy crests and the male's white patches.
