The Eau Gallie Causeway is one of three bridges that can take people from the mainland to the Brevard County beachside from the Melbourne, FL area. The causeway bridge itself is a large fixed bridge...so it never needs to rise to allow large boats to go under (in fact...all three Melbourne area bridges are fixed). The 1.4 acre park and boat ramp on the southeast side of the bridge is capable of handling small craft boats and watercraft (you will often see folks on jet ski and with windsurfing gear as well). The park and bridge is always loaded with fishermen and bikers, walkers, joggers and runners passing by on the sidewalk in front...so unless it is raining you will see a number of people using the Eau Gallie bridge amenities. Gleason Park is a large beachside park in Indian Harbour Beach (just a couple of miles from my home). It is located about half way between the Indian River and the Atlantic Ocean. The park offers some beautiful boardwalks, a sitting area, a small lake, a fitness track, a pool (public) and a large indoor area for meetings...and even voting. My boy and I love to come to the park and just check out the birds, fish...and even a gator or two. 07/28/2012

  If you love a great day at the beach, now you'll be able to bring your pooch with you.  Canova Beach, at the corner of Eau Gallie Blvd and Highway A1A in Indian Harbour Beach, Brevard County FL opened in February 2012 to allow you to bring your dog to the beach.  This is a pilot project to see how the program works. If all goes well there may be a chance that the boundarie so the beach will be extended. But there are rules that must be followed: All dogs must be up to date on shots and have current licenses.  All dogs must be on a short leash. If you  have never been to Green Turtle Market you are in for a real surprise...it is absolutely one of the most interesting places you will ever run into...and if you come once...you will be back! It is hard to explain what this place is...wine and beer shop, restaurant, deli,  catering shop, specialty foods, prepared foods, gift baskets, great wine tastings...I could write a blog about each facet of Green Turtle's many sides! I will make a couple of recommendations here: 1. Try the restaurant: The Grapevine Cafe is a fun and casual place to have a meeting with your friends or a nice quick lunch or a no pressure first date. Having grown up in the New York City metro area...I love Chinese food (well...food in general). I must admit the Space Coast has a couple of fairly good Chinese restaurants to dine in...but for take out or Delivery beachside my absolute favorite is Golden Dragon at 291 East Eau Gallie Blvd in Indian Harbour Beach. This is not a place to go for a map of the Chinese Zodiac...a pot of Chinese tea...and a bowl of noodles and duck sauce. They have a couple of tables but those are predominately for customers who are waiting for pick up. This is a place to call ahead and have your menu in hand. FYI...if you are looking for delivery you must have a $15 minimum order. Golden Dragon serves both lunch and dinner. I have been writing about and updating the progress of the new beachfront park just north of Eau Gallie Causeway and east of A1A in Indian Harbour Beach...the name is Irene H. Canova Park. It may have taken a while (eleven years to be exact between lawsuits, bad contractors and money issues with the County...) but it is now complete and ready for the enjoyment of Brevard County residents and tourists! Irene H. Canova Park has some really nice facilities including a pristine beach, a community center meeting area that can be rented out for very reasonable rates, sixty four parking spots.This park will be a great spot for meetings, parties, and maybe even small beach front weddings! There are a couple of good places to get a cheese Steak sandwich on the Space Coast...my favorite is Philly's Finest on Eau Gallie Blvd in Indian Harbour Beach. Philly's makes a traditional Cheese Steak that cant be beat...but they also offer a great chicken cheese steak, a pizza steak (steak sandwich with pizza sauce), good burgers, great..will seasoned fries...and a about a million ways to offer chicken cutlets, eggplant, Italian sandwiches and more! I have never had a bad meal here...and the bread even gives a pretty good interpretation of real Philly bread (as good as it is going to get in Florida). Sandwiches are priced from about $6-9 for a 9"...a couple dollars more for a 12"...add fries and a drink for $3 more....you will not leave hungry...they load on the meat!   ...first a disclaimer...Chinese food in general is not one of the better cuisines available on the Space Coast. We have quite a few decent Sushi places...and Japanese steak houses tend to be quite good....but traditional Chinese restaurants seem to come and go. One that seems to have been here forever...and is still one of the very best is Jade Palace in the Publix shopping center in Indian Harbour Beach (corner of South Patrick and Eau Gallie just East of the Causeway). I have been coming here since the mid-1980's Jade Palace has been in the same location for nearly 30 years and pumps out dishes from different styles of Chinese cuisine including  Mandarin, Szechuan, Hunan and Cantonese. The construction of the new beach park at the site of the old Patsy's Shell Shop just north of Eau Gallie Blvd on A1A in Indian Harbour Beach is nearing completion. (see my original post: http://activerain.com/blogsview/2522490/space-coast-parks-recreation-series-new-beach-park-in-indian-harbour-beach-is-under-construction-again- )   The roof needs to be put on the two structures that have been built (what appears to be bathroom facilities and a BBQ area). The parking lot has been finished and some planting will be done. We have quite a few  good to very good Italian restaurants in the Melbourne area...especially on the beachside...one of those that I enjoy going to is Pistilli's Pizza in Indian Harbour Beach, FL. Pistilli's has been around for quite some time (1949) and they prepare food in a Southern Italian style that is reminiscent of a Northeastern U.S. eatery. The menu is also just what you would expect from a Southern Italian restaurant...eggplant parmigiana, lasagne, fettuccini alfredo, stuffed shells, baked ziti, spaghetti and meatballs...really good New Jersey style pizza...and much more. The lunch specials here really shine...for $5.99 you get your choice of entree (the eggplant parm is great), a half loaf of bread and a drink...and you can add a salad for $1!!! So I am always willing to share my favorites...fav pizza place, fav BBQ, fav Happy Hour...etc... Well my favorite sandwich shop by far is Doubles Beachside in Indian Harbour Beach. First, a little history. Doubles Hoagies opened in 1983 (across the street from the present location). It was a small sub shop that (from someone who came once a week back in the 80's) was always packed. I was very happy when the new Doubles opened. It is a very large space that has plenty of tables, pool tables, a bar inside the sub shop as well as a separate tiki bar that opens at night. The hoagies (subs) are really good...with plenty of meat. A new park is under construction...or should I say back under construction in Indian Harbour Beach, FL...just north or the Eau Gallie Causeway. The spot was once the location of Patsy's Shell Shop...a local institution in Indian Harbour Beach for many years. When it was determined that the land would be turned into a park the contract was awarded to a company from another area in Florida. That company started the project a little over a year ago...then bailed out without finishing. A new contractor has been hired and the building has started again in earnest. This area of the beach is very popular with surfers so it will be interesting when the park opens up (with some facilities for families) if it will change the use of this particular strip of beach. Millennium Park in Indian Harbour Beach, FL is a small beachfront part that is a perfect place to take your family, have a BBQ, play on the playground, or just lay out on the beach....all within just a few steps of your car! The park has quite a few amenities for such a small area. A bunch of BBQ party huts are scattered on the grounds...this is a great place to plan an inexpensive beach birthday party or family reunion...and you can let the kids run wild! The park does have facilities including a shower and bathrooms...but they are not always open so call the City of Indian Harbour Beach to ask for hours of operation at 321.773.0552 The park does have an ample amount of parking for its size...and it is free parking so you will not have to stuff the meter with quarters! For a place that has been around for over 20 years in the same Indian Harbour Beach location...Charlie & Jake's can be a little hard to find... that is because the sign that has been there for a very long time is no longer in the front of the parking lot. Good thing everyone in the area knows exactly where Charlie & Jake's is...that is because the BBQ here is just that good! I am not sure I have ever had a meal...lunch or dinner...that I did not enjoy here. I love the sandwiches for lunch...try the pulled pok sandwich on garlic toast...awesome. For the 6th year, professional women's tennis will visit Brevard County and tennis lovers can watch tournament matches between May 1-8 at Kiwi Tennis Club in Indian Harbour Beach, Florida.
