SpaceX is planning on launching a Falcon 9 rocket this evening from the Kennedy Space Center. The payload is a commercial communications satellite for Colorado based Echostar. The rocket to be used is a "flight proven" or previously flown rocket (yeah SpaceX, the recycling space company!). There is a 2 hour launch window that will open at 6:53pm this evening with the launch to be from pad 39A. The first stage is planning a landing on a drone ship in the Atlantic named "Of Course I Still Love You". If all goes as planned, the rocket should lift off right at dusk which will be a beautiful site!

I have blogged repeatedly about Elon Musk and SpaceX are revolutionizing the space industry. I love that SpaceX is re-using their rockets to cut down on space garbage orbiting the Earth. Initially they had their rockets landing on platforms out in the ocean. There were a couple of set backs, but, they quickly pulled out of that and started landing on terra firma.Click below to see what a rocket landing on Earth  looks like!

Elon Musk and SpaceX are doing it again. An unmanned SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket will lift off from NASA's Kennedy Space Center Launch Complex 39A to carry supplies and equipment to the International Space Station - ISS  on a Dragon Capsule. This will be SpaceX’s 12th mission under NASA’s Commercial Resupply Services contract.  The launch window opens at 12:31pm Eastern Standard Time.An interesting factoid is that the ISS  or International Space Station  has been continuously occupied since November 2000. In the last 17 years, more than 200 people and a variety of international and commercial spacecraft have visited the orbiting laboratory. The space station remains the springboard to NASA's next great leap in exploration which includes future missions to Mars.

NASA has announced that they will begin doing research on the Space Coast regarding Sonic Booms. The research called Sonic Booms in Atmospheric Turbulence, or SonicBAT  is intended to lead to a better understanding of how low altitude atmospheric turbulence affects sonic booms in humid climates such as we have here in Brevard County. Beginning August 21 and continuing for 10 days, NASA will fly the F/A-18 Hornet out of The Kennedy Space Center's Shuttle Landing Facility flying to an altitude of 32,000 feet. From there the Hornet will accelerate to Mach 1, the speed of sound, to produce sonic booms. At the same time as this is happening, a glider equipped with dozens of microphones will fly at a lower altitude and record the sonic booms for review by researchers. The goal is to produce 3...

We were originally hearing that SpaceX was going to launch a "flight proven" Falcon 9 rocket on Saturday, but, today they announced that the earliest launch date would be Monday. A "flight proven" Rocket is one that has been previously launched and landed here on the Space Coast. This  launch will be to put the BulgariaSat-1 communications satellite into orbit. comingThe  8,000 pound satellite will be the first geostationary satellite, (meaning it will match the speed of Earth's rotation and stay in a fixed position over Bulgaria) and is designed to deliver communications signals for Bulgaria and television programming to the Balkans and southeastern Europe.SpaceX's first had success with a "flight proven"  rocket in March. As I've said before, I think Elon Musk is revolutionary is "re-...

SpaceX successfully conducted a pre-flight check of a Falcon 9's systems known as a "static test fire" this past Sunday at noon. This was in anticipation of the launch of a Falcon 9 rocket that will carry 6,000 pounds of supplies and equipment to the International Space Station (ISS), scheduled for 5:55 p.m. Thursday evening. The launch will be from the Kennedy Space Center's pad 39A. A landing of the first stage of the rocket is expected at the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station's Landing Zone 1 less than 10 minutes after liftoff. I have made no secret of my admiration for Elon Musk and SpaceX. Being a die-hard fan of recycling, I have a tremendous amount of respect for what SpaceX has done in terms of launching their rockets and landing them with the intent of reusing them. This will not only end up saving money, but more importantly, it will cut down on all the Space garbage that is currently orbiting our Earth.SpaceX is planning on launching their first reused rocket  this coming Thursday at 6 p.m. The used Falcon 9 rocket will launch a commercial communications satellite into orbit from the Kennedy Space Center. I will keep you updated on the progress!

Though most folks know the Space Coast was named for the fact that the Kennedy Space Center is located here, they seem to know little about the facility itself beyond the rocket launches. For starters...the size of KSC itself is incredible! It is 34 miles long and about 6 miles wide...covering approximately 219 square miles! To give you a reference point Manhattan Island (NYC) is 22.7 square miles and about 13.4 miles long and 2.3 miles wide (just over 1/10th the size of KSC). Only about 9% of the land is public access land...the rest is restricted. All U.S. manned rocket launches since 1968 have taken off from KSC. Every trip to the Moon, every shuttle launch, and every trip to the International Space Station from U.S. soil has departed from a launch pad at KSC. Today many private ent...

Don't forget that Kennedy Space Center Visitors Complex is hosting their Free Brevard County Residents weekend through Sunday.  This is the VAB (pictured) Vehicle Assembly Building, and has been used to assemble and house launch vehicles. It is the largest single story building in the world. It is the fourth largest building in the world by volume. The American flag on the side of the building is the largest painted American flag in the world. If you haven't gotten to KSC this weekend, it's a great way to spend the day. We learned so much.  If you do go, be sure to see the IMAX movie on the Hubble Telescope. It was amazing.  The pictures were like none I've ever seen before.     Sandy Shores, Melbourne FL REALTOR® Specializing in Residential, Investment and Relocation Real Estate We h...

The safe landing of the Space Shuttle Atlantis on 7/21/2011 at 5:57 AM, signalled the end of an era here on the Space Coast. This 12 day flight officially ended the 30 year old shuttle program but there is renewed hope for continued success at KSC. The Atlas V rocket is undergoing safety evaluations to determine if it can be used for manned space flights. Delta rockets continue to launch payloads and Space X is quickly becoming a viable commercial launch program. NASA will now focus on deep space exploration while dealing with serious budget restraints. Welcome home Atlantis! I'll visit you when you are on permanent display at the Kennedy Space Center.
