Aurora's no Columbine, Sanford no Selma Aurora's no Columbine, Sanford no Selma Like many Americans, I was at a loss for words when I first heard the news out of Aurora, Colorado last week.  The news that the opening-night excitement of one of this year's blockbuster films had been trumped by an actual tragedy of epic proportions was (and remains) truly disturbing. We've seen what's sadly become a bit of a routine when things like this occur:  interviews with the (alleged) killer's friends and neighbors that can't imagine him doing anything of the sort, school teachers that recall the (alleged) killer as being "a bit odd, but nothing scary", and the inevitable comparisons between this current event and others. But Aurora's no Columbine, Sanford no Selma- and we do little more than kid o...

God Bless Chief Bill Lee and the Sanford Police Department    God Bless Chief Bill Lee and the Sanford Police Department Sanford Police chief fired Sanford Police Chief Bill Lee, who drew criticism for his department's actions in the Trayvon Martin case, was fired last week. Lee characterized his firing late Wednesday as "without cause."  In a statement, he said the department's work on the Trayvon case has been misrepresented, and he predicted that it would eventually be seen as "a proper effort to find the truth and follow the law." I trust this will indeed be the case- and that many will discover that the media's mere reporting of something doesn't make their reports true. Now that the City of Sanford, FL has seen fit to terminate the employment of Chief Bill Lee, I eagerly await: 1....

"Fleeing when you're attacked places the life of the criminal above the life of the victim"- State Sen. David Simmons Task Force on Citizen Safety and Protection...pre-meetingFamily of Trayvon Martin rally with group looking to repeal "Stand Your Ground" law (officially Florida Statute 776: Justifiable Use of Force) I spent a good bit of today attending the meeting of Florida's Task Force on Citizen Safety and Protection.  It was an enlightening time (to say the least).  As virtually anyone who knows me will tell you, I have long been a supporter of law enforcement- and I'm a supporter of Florida Statute 776, also known as our "Stand Your Ground" law. The committee welcomed and encouraged public comment, and I took advantage of the opportunity to speak on behalf of our law and its appli...

Where will you spend Memorial Day 2012?   Where will you spend Memorial Day 2012? Tomorrow is the day we've set aside to honor our true heroes.  That's true heroes- not Mickey Mouse, not Michael Jordan, not Lady GaGa (absolutely not Lady GaGa).  Memorial Day isn't for the famous- rather, it's a day when we look to give honor to the endless sea of crosses at Arlington and the American soldier who rests in honored glory and whose name is known but to God. As for me, I will spend the day in Sanford, Florida- a city much-maligned and wrongly-maligned in recent months.  There are a number of events here in Central Florida and a bigger one held in downtown Orlando and elsewhere- but I choose to both honor our fallen heroes and support the great city of Sanford at the same time. I encourage al...

George Zimmerman in jail, other Trayvon thoughts Hard to live and work around here without this case taking over at least some part of your day.  Driving into Sanford this afternoon, for example, I thought "Dang.  Hope there aren't any protests today that are gonna have the roads shut down".  Might be silly, but that was a thought. As I've made a number of comments while this case progressed, I'd be remiss if I failed to comment on things as they stand now- and actually would've done so earlier today had I not had 13 showings.  So, here we go, with George Zimmerman in jail, other Trayvon case thoughts To Al Tawana Brawley Sharpton:  How dare you try to be the voice of calm here- you sorry, self-serving race-hustler?  You and your main "self-serving" competitor, Jesse Jackson, swept into...

Neighborhood Watch...or no Neighborhood Watch?Neighborhood Watch or No Neighborhood Watch?- that is the question. Or at least one of them.So where do you stand? Are you in favor of Neighborhood Watches, or against them? Do you feel the serve a purpose in the community you live and work in- or are they simply a bunch of nosy, busybody Gladys Kravitzes with nothing else to do with their lives but check for "foreign" vehicles along their beat? The simmering Trayvon Martin/George Zimmerman case is surely causing many to give Neighborhood Watches more consideration than ever- and I'm not yet sure whether that's a good thing.Would you want to get "Zimmerman'd"? I wouldn't, and I dare say few others would welcome such a thing. The merits of the Zimmerman case (or lack thereof) notwithstanding, ...

If I had a hammer....   If I had a hammer.... At first, I thought it was a bit troubling that Secretary of Labor Hilda Solis decreed that all Department of Labor buildings across the country must display these posters.  The thought that there's any type of pseudo-official endorsement of race-hustling publicity pimps Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson nearly turned my stomach. But then I remembered all of the great things Sharpton and Jesse have in store for us as Americans.  You know- "justice" and all. Here's your opportunity, Al and Jesse:  Prove to us here- and all of America- that you're truly men of your word.  You don't have to go too far, either: You can start right here by marching against these 2 young black men who (allegedly) gave the white man in the story a savage beating with a...

God Bless the Sanford Police Department Folks will notice a new logo/image at the end of my signature line for a while. It's the badge of the embattled Sanford (FL) Police Department. I will include it for an indefinite period of time as a showing of support for this local police force- a group of folks on the streets 24 hours/day in looking to both serve and protect all of us here. The Sanford Police Department is coming under fire from all parts of the world these days. It seems that anyone who doesn't work or have anything else to do with their lives has decided to hurl one accusation after another with regard to the Trayvon Martin case. The police here have been called incompetent, they've been called racists, they've been accused of a cover-up, of "protecting one of their own". You k...

Since the shooting of Trayvon Martin the "Stand Your ground Law" has come under extreme criticism.  Earlier this week I wrote another blog about this before it gathered nationwide steam. http://activerain.com/blogsview/3076805/murder-in-sanford-florida-speak-up-and-speak-out- There is a movement a foot to have George Zimmermans concealed gun permit revoked. There are other voices demanding that Stand Your Ground be repealed. CBS NEWS REPORT CASTLE LAW Most states have a version of the Castle Law.  Basically it says your home is your castle. If an intruder forces you into a position in your own home where you have no place to flee, and you fear for your life,  you are justified in shooting them. STAND YOUR GROUND The Stand Your Ground law operates on the same premise as the Castle Law ex...

How much did you make off Trayvon Martin today? How much did you make off Trayvon Martin today? $10 each. “Get your Trayvon Martin Memorial Rally shirts here!”  Or something like that.  Amazing how so many folks want you to believe they’re in favor of “justice”, while they’re all in it for fame and the Almighty Dollar..or $10.  I don’t know if this entrepreneur is strictly a local franchisee of some sort…or if he’s part of some entrepreneurial co-op…or… Never mind- this guy is just flat-out making money off of a dead kid.  Nothing cute about that.  And nothing cute about trampling on a young man’s grave in pursuit of cash. How much did you make off Trayvon Martin today? How much did you make off Trayvon Martin today? Some haven’t sought to make money, per se. Some are nothing but pot-ca...

Have you been following the case of Trayvon Martin? This is the young black 17 year old boy who was unarmed and shot down by a self appointed neighborhood watch captain.  The community was a gated community in Sanford Florida.  The young man was visiting his father.  He walked to a local 7-11 and was coming back through the parking lot, when accosted by George Zimmerman a self appointed community watch dog. Trayvon was armed with a cell phone, bag of Skittles and a can of soda.  Zimmerman was armed with a 9 mm.  911 recordings show the police dispatcher told Zimmerman not to pursue this young man.  To stand down!  Clearly heard on recordings is Trayvon begging for someone to help him. Trayvon was on the cell phone to his girlfriend telling her what was going on. He had done nothing wron...

Tragedy, racism and a circus:  the death of Trayvon Martyr Martin   Tragedy, racism and a circus:  the death of Trayvon Martyr Martin   Editor’s note for those outside of our little part of America:  Trayvon Martin was a 17-year-old young black man when he was shot and killed by George Zimmerman, a Hispanic man. I hate this Trayvon Martin story….hate it, hate it, hate it- for it’s a story filled with nothing but losers.  Death crowns no victors save the one(s) who’ve gone home to see the face of Jesus- and the circumstances surrounding Trayvon Martin’s death are known but to George Zimmerman and the Lord. But was race an issue in Trayvon‘s death at all?  Not sure- but it’s surely been an issue ever since.  Word to the Martin family and others:  young Trayvon’s death is a tragedy regardl...

Pedestrian tales from the middle of the road, #9It's your turn again, Seminole County Sheriff Donald Eslinger...Another of our neghbors has found little use for the City of Sanford or Seminole County's pedestrian traffic laws. He's now gone- but his family, the truck driver and his family will absorb the price of his actions for a long time to come.May God bless, keep and comfort all families involved.. May God also allow us a great start to 2012- and lead our local law enforcement agencies to protect and serve our community as they've sworn to do- even when that means protecting us from ourselves.Lives are worth it, right? And as this story reminds us, when 18-wheeler strikes a human, chances of the human winning the battle are vey slim.Brandon man killed while crossing W. State Road 4...
