"When You Teach a Homeowner to Fish…" We are bombarded with a lot of messages daily, courtesy of advertising, but I sometimes wonder if advertisers ever consider educating consumers first before throwing their "message" out there.  Turns out there is a discrepancy between financial advertising and financial education, and the gap shows no signs of slowing down. According to an article published in Reverse Mortgage Daily, a recent study by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau found that for every $25 dollars spent on financial marketing, only $1 is spent on financial education. I don't know how we expect to guide the public, and help them in their time of need if we advertise more than we educate. I'm not saying not to market your products but how about mixing some education into tha...

Happy New Year to all! As the stabilization of the real estate market continued to improve over the year, it created extreme excitement about what 2014 may hold for the market, especially in our Tampa Bay area. In this blog, we will briefly discuss the most recent events that occurred in the housing market during the final months of 2013, as well as discuss what the real estate industry may see during the year of 2014. Looking Back Due to the short supply of inventory throughout the majority of 2013, the real estate industry witnessed some swift price increases resulting from the increased demand for homes. In response to increased demand, constructing spending reached the highest point the market had seen in the last five years. Sales, pending sales, median prices, and closings all saw...

Non-Existent Long-Term Care Solutions The harsh realities of retirement and long term care are upon us but America continues to prove its unequipped to handle the growing number of retirees who will need long term in the future. “Unfortunately, America does not have a strategy to deal with this growing demand,” writes Long-Term Care Commission chair Bruce Chernof in an editorial, according to an article published in Reverse Mortgage Daily.  The sad truth is, that while the biggest retirement concern is financial security and the "Golden Years" are slowly becoming the "Debt Years" few initiatives are being taken to provide affordable long term care solutions. Part of problems abound from misunderstanding between retirees and family members, particularly those who falsely believe their fa...

New home sales are an integral segment of the continual stabilization of the real estate industry, especially in recent years, and the relationships between home builders and Realtors are allowing for the increased volume of sales.   E.J. Atchner, Senior Vice President of Bank of America, notes that ‘many builders, regardless of their size, are taking a much more collaborative view of partnering with Realtors than in the past.’ An incredible 66% of all new homes sold in 2013 were original prospects of Realtors that were introduced to home builders, according to the National Association of Realtors’ 2013 Buyer Profile Survey, and 88% of potential homebuyers said they will contact a Realtor to assist them through each step of the buying process. The regional marketplace expertise possesse...

Educating Clients Should Be a #1 Priority Bloggers come in all shapes and sizes. Cliche, but true. Not everyone is hear to blog about the same thing, nor will everyone bring the same background or wealth of information to the table. What everyone will bring is a way to educate their (past, present and future) clients. Looking back, this is one of the reasons I've always admired about blogging: the freedom. The freedom to blog about whatever, whenever, and share what you know or found out, with everyone on the Internet. Must the content be original and not just copy and pasted off another website? Yes, but this doesn't limit what you can write about. You just need to make sure it comes from you. At a time where information is passed along faster than ever before, it's incredible how much...

West Coast of Florida-  Two bald eagles, Ozzie and Harriet, are expecting two chicks with a Christmas Day due date. The nest is being streamed live on the web 24 hours a day.    (See video player below) The nest is located high up in a slash pine tree near Fort Myers, FL. The birds do not see or hear anything coming from the camera. The eggs were laid on Nov. 17 and Nov. 20. The two eagles have been residing in their nest between October and April for over twenty years. The eagles mate for life. The veteran eagle parents take turns incubating the two eggs laid by Harriet by maintaining a 105-degree temperature. That is the temperature the embryos need for proper development. Harriet and Ozzie will continue to nurture their eggs until a few days before Christmas when the eggs are expecte...

Recycling Wine Bottles? When you pick up your favorite bottle of wine at your grocery or wine store, do you ever give a thought about the glass wine bottle? Do you ever wonder where the glass wine bottle was made or who made it? When you throw your empty wine bottle into your recycling bin, do you ever wonder what happens to it? Well, with this Blog, we’re going to answer these questions and, perhaps, a few more. Americans love their wine. Let’s begin by throwing out a few interesting wine facts. First, each year, we adult Americans consume over “350 Million” cases of wine. That’s about “4.2 Billion” bottles! Florida, by the way, is the “Third” wine consuming State in the nation! Did you know that Florida grows grapes and makes world-class wines? Yep, that’s a fact! Florida can boast of...

Bocce Ball a New Old Game Bocce Ball closely related to ancient games played in the Roman Empire. Developed into its present form in Italy, and is played around Europe and also in overseas areas that have received Italian migrants, including Australia, North America, and South America and Australia. Rules of Play Bocce is traditionally played on natural soil and asphalt courts 27.5 metres (90 ft) in length and 2.5 to 4 metres (8.2 to 13 ft) wide. Bocce balls can be made of metal or various kinds of plastic.  A game can be conducted between two players, or two teams of two, three, or four. A match is started by a randomly chosen side being given the opportunity to throw a smaller ball, the jack (called a boccino or pallino in some areas), from one end of the court into a zone 5 metres (1...

Home Size Matter to Seniors  We’ve known for a long time home buying is an individual experience, largely dependent on personal circumstances and tastes. Now, two national surveys shed light on how generational differences can influence the choices buyers make concerning home size, location and age of the home.   The National Association of Home Builders’ “What Home Buyers Really Want” survey indicates the amount of space a buyer requires drops steadily as the age of the buyer increases. Among those younger than 35, the desired home size is around 2,500 square feet compared to the 2,065 square feet averaged by those 65 and older. That’s a pretty significant difference. Meanwhile, the inaugural “2013 National Association of Realtors Home Buyer and Seller Generational Trends” study relea...

Are Active Adults Too Old to Trick or Treat? Are you ever too old to “trick or treat?”  A little bit of pre-Halloween humor… You know you are too old to Trick or Treat when:   10. You keep knocking on your own front door. 9. You remove your false teeth to change your appearance. 8. You ask for soft high fiber candy only. 7. When someone drops a candy bar in your bag, and you lose your balance and fall over. 6. People say: ‘Great Boris Karloff Mask,’ and you’re not wearing a mask. 5. When the door opens you yell, ‘Trick or…’ and you can’t remember the rest. 4. By the end of the night, you have a bag full of restraining orders. 3. You have to carefully choose a costume that doesn’t dislodge your hairpiece. 2. You’re the only Power Ranger in the Neighborhood with a walker. And the number o...

Not All Reverse Mortgages Are Created Equal There's an important distinction to be made about the reverse mortgages I blog about and other reverse mortgages you hear about on the news. The reverse mortgages I blog about are insured by the Federal Housing Administration. This means a couple of things: FHA-insured reverse mortgages are non-recourse loans, meaning your heirs are not responsible for repayment, even if you pass away. With forward mortgages, or home equity lines of credit, however, your heirs incur the debt if you were to pass away. While it's essential that you, as the borrower, benefit from the substantial cash flow boost a reverse mortgage can offer, it's also important to consider what you will be leaving behind if you chose not to get a reverse mortgage. On top of your p...
