The Federal Reserve lowered interest rates by a half percentage point on Tuesday, bringing a much needed cut in the rates.   Many people in the credit markets believe Bernanke is behind the curve and should have lowered rate 6 months ago. Nonetheless, it was a welcome site for the credit market. Bernanke contrasts in style quite differently than his predecessor, Alan Greenspan.   Greenspan would  act quickly to calm the markets whenever there was a hint of any problem in the markets.  This can be seen in the1997 when the Asian credit crisis hit and dried up the credit markets.  That collapse was prevented from being a major catastrophe if Greenspan didn't act as quickly as he did.  Back in 2001 when 9/11 became a reality, Greenspan once again came to the rescue to calm the markets and h... 09/19/2007

We keep hearing about the horrible foreclosure statistics.  My God you would think that we are having a complete disaster in Florida because we rank 3rd in the nation.  So let's give a little context.  So California ranks number 1...well it also ranks number 1 in population among the 50 states.  Florida ranks 3rd...in population we rank 4th after CA, NY, and TX.  Texas is also in the top 10 for foreclosures but they rank 3rd in population.  Now when you talk about Nevada which ranks number 2 in foreclosures while being near the bottom in population rank...that is a significant issue.  That is the context.  So in a really crappy market it is not out of line to see states like Florida, California, and Texas in the top 10 for foreclosures.I'm not saying the foreclosure rate is great.  But ... 09/18/2007

This past December, our neighborhood gained another new place to eat.  In many neighborhoods that may not be such a big deal but Seminole Heights faces challenges because of the limited depth on many of the commercial lots.  Sometimes folks just have to get creative about location.   That is what Tampa native and Hillsborough High School (Our neighborhood high school) alum Mike Merino did when he opened Merino's Deli on the south end of the building that also is the home of an auto repair shop in Old Seminole Heights.Few business owner take the time to actively build and gain support from the neighborhood association and neighbors in advance of setting up shop.  Not the case with Mike.  For months we heard he was going to be opening the deli/sandwhich shop.  We heard of the bureaucratic... 09/13/2007

As part of my effort to highlight some of the neighborhood gems that we have here in Seminole Heights I wanted to share information on neighborhood businesses that make use a unique community in Tampa.  One of those gems is Tampa Antiquarian Books (813-234-0100).  At a time when independent bookstore of any kind are increasingly rare, neighborhood resident and proprietor, Steph Beckel is finishing up her second year in a vintage 1925 storefront on the corner of Hanna and Central.  Located a bit off the commercial path since most of Central Avenue is residential use, it would be easy to miss this store and the others shops in this little strip.  Looks can be deceiving, while someone going by might think it is a small store, once you enter you will find over 50,000 books.  Among her stock... 09/11/2007
