We quit the rat race eight years ago, and moved to the North Georgia Mountains. This was a life changing decision, and as it turns out, a great decision. Both my wife and I quit good jobs, left successful businesses behind to find ourselves a more tranquil, less stressful lives. Was not all that easy initially, but through the years our entrepreneurial spirit overcame all obstacles, and we created a very successful, yet almost stress free and definitely FUN business. Now we live on the property we purchased in 2007 that not only offers a lifestyle we searched for but also pays our bills and allows us to save for retirement. Not that I will ever retire - I like to stay active, and will do so as long as I am physically capable. Good track record though - my grandfather who passed on at th...

Should I Buy a Vacation Home? A critical component to the overall answer is personal based on one's own financial landscape and goals.  That aside, Where? and ask yourself "Why" ?? are you thinking about buying a vacation home. The obvious is for personal enjoyment more than likely. But perhaps the focus is more for investment purposes or a place for a permanent retirement haven in a few years, in which case can put you ahead of the game now. There are some tax benefits such as mortgage interest and property taxes which are deductible and help to offset the house payment.  If you treat the second home as a rental property, you can fully depreciate it, as well. You are required to occupy it for two weeks per year or 10% of the total rented time, whichever is less. Before jumping into bu...

North Georgia's Spring Tonic Harvested in Blue Ridge Mountains     I am a southern gal for sure and Georgia home grown but I admit, I do not recall ever hearing about “ramps” in reference to a vegetable.  Ramps are spring onions, wild leeks, wood leeks and wild garlic. I do know about spring onions and leeks and even garlic (my personal favorite); just never heard them called ramps.  In case you are not familiar with “ramps” either, they are the first green vegetable to emerge in the spring in the North Georgia Mountains.  Do not look for these along the Georgia coast, because you will only find them in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains or deep in the Cohutta forest.   "The old timers say they are a spring tonic. ... If you sit down to a big meal of ramps, don't be surprised if...

A taste of spring is in the air this weekend in the Blue Ridge Mountains.  So pretty outside weatherwise, even though a little nippy this morning but blue skies and clear viewing across Lake Blue Ridge to the Blue Ridge Mountains beyond. The temp is sure to push 70 as the day warms. Plenty of sunshine to go around. A wonderful day to "unplug" for a little bit and take a walk with my two cocker spaniels and five (yes, five) cats!  I am not the crazy old cat lady but sometimes, I wonder.  I rescue cats and darn, if I haven't gotten attached to every one of them.  I get a kick out of how they will all follow me and the dogs, keeping their distance but always keeping us in their sights. I really enjoy leisurely walks around the lake.  So interesting to come up on an unbeaten path  to explor...

Blue Ridge, GA voters could see a referendum on the sale of alcohol on Sunday this March, according to a decision by the Blue Ridge City Council on December 10, 2013. Several restaurants in Blue Ridge requested that the council do whatever is necessary to allow Sunday sales of alcohol to generate revenue for the restaurants and tax revenue for the city. According to Mayor Donna Whitener, conferring with city attorney David Syfan, Sunday sales will have to be approved by Blue Ridge voters. There had been some previous discussion about whether or not the council could approve Sunday sales without having a referendum. The council voted 4-0 to move forward with the process that could lead to the referendum. That process includes drawing up an ordinance allowing Sunday alcohol sales, setting...

Undiscovered Stars   I love to run across local people in the Blue Ridge area of the North Georgia mountains and discover their unique gifts and talents.  I think it's so important to promote local businesses, where you can find "gems" almost anywhere you go.  These wonderful, undiscovered stars are not looking for attention, and are usually a little embarrassed when the focus is on them.  I think I caught Alta off guard... The other day, on the spur of the moment, I decided to have lunch at the local Pizza Hut on East Main Street in Blue Ridge. The lunch rush was over and I just wanted a quiet place to relax for a few minutes.  Alta, my server was friendly and provided excellent service.  While I awaited my pizza to arrive, I noticed a lot of photographs displayed throughout the dinin...
