Today the US House of Representatives passed legislation that would extend the closing deadline for the Home-buyersTax Credit.  The Senate has already passed a similar measure and this  is the second time this year for the house to do so.  If the US Senate can pass a conference bill the credit will be available to Closing Home buyersall the way through September, 2010.  (The deadlinie to qualify for the credit of April 30th, 2010 will not be extended, this bill is for closing those transactions only) Estimates are as high as 180,000 for loan applications backlogged in a system that became swamped by potential home-buyers trying to cash in on the tax credit that can be as high as $8,000 to a first time home purchaser.  The vote was for a separate bill as previous attempts to remedy the b... 06/29/2010

I moved to the Columbus, GA and Ft. Benning area from Southern California, yes the land of "fruits and nuts" to the land of "grits and sweet tea".  I knew that I had passed into a different place around Mississsippi.  That is where I discovered SWEET TEA. The two main differences in price are due to property tax differences and the builders. Muscogee County GA taxes are the highest in our area. $200,000 in house = around $250 in monthly taxes. Your taxes on that same home in Alabama might be $100 to $125 per month. In Harris County, GA and Chattahoochee Cty, GA they might be around $175 or so.   The other factor is with the builders. With the growth here we have seen a lot of out-of-town builders moving into the area, in particular from the Atlanta market which is very depressed right now. Some of these builders are good and offer a good product at a great price. Columbus Ga, Fort Benning News:    Turner construction of Huntsville Al.  has been awarded a 335 million dollar bid to build the new hospital at Fort Benning.  The new facility will be nearly 750,000 square feet in size and will replace Martin Army Hospital.  The soldiers and retirees at Fort Benning will have a first class health care facility when the construction is completed approximately 3 years from now. 10/16/2009

OK... What is BRAC?  Well is stands for Base Realignment and Closure and what that means in English is as it effects us here in Coumbus, GA and Phenix City AL. (we are only a few miles apart, divided by a river). The big impact of the BRAC move to our area is the moving of Ft. Knox"s Armor group is moving to Ft. Benning, GA.  Not only will this increase the number of Military persons at Ft.    Danny M. Bishop, 1SG U.S. Army Retired was laid to rest at the Fort Benning Main Post Cemetery.  Graveside services with Military Honors were held on a blustery rainy morning and just about ten minutes prior to the beginning of the service the rain stopped.  Tears flowed as Taps sounded.  A very professional and sympathetic Military Detail fired three volleys and gave a final salute to an old soldier.    Honoring Danny Bishop were family and friends, members and the Color Guard of VFW Post 665, where Danny was an active member and former Commander.  Members of the American Legion Post 35 attended, as well as  representatives of the Elks Lodge 111.  Danny Bishop was a kind gentle man and an exemplary soldier.
