Just in from the Madison-Morgan Convention and Visitors Bureau: "The 2009 CVB tourism numbers have been finalized! Despite the state of the economy, tourism is Madison was up 9%! Through tracking groups, events, and tourists in the visitors center, 2009's numbers totaled 62,477 - not including all of the visitors we are unable to track!" To put these numbers in perspective - there are about 18,000 residents of Morgan County, and fewer than 5,000 of them live in Madison!  Hospitality is our largest economic engine, followed by agriculture.  Just imagine how many fewer restaurants and shops we would have if not for our beloved visitors! Madison is conveniently located about an hour east of Atlanta, off I-20, and about 1/2 hour south of Athens, home of the University of Georgia Bulldogs. M...

On a frigid Georgia day, its great to be looking forward to EquiFest 2010! EquiFest is a celebration of all things equine here in beautiful Madison Georgia and the surrounding area, and I was privileged to be part of a hardy group that created the inaugeral event last year. The day long free event featured horses of every color, size, and discipline.  We had minis, we had drafts. Popular breeds like arabians, quarter horses, and thoroughbreds, plus rare breeds like Nokota and Cleveland Bay.  English, western, and pleasure horses - you name it, we had it. The kiddie corral was amazing - pony rides and horse-crafts, including make your own stick ponys! Plus local vets, farriers, barn builders, and feed experts - if it pertains to horses, you'll find it at EquiFest. So save the date - Satu...

One of the best things about my hometown of Madison, Georgia is the incredible locally owned businesses we have here. One of my personal favorites is Antique Sweets - a chocolate shop located just around the corner from my office. My friend Patrick is always stirring up delighful treats.  Bulldog Bites are popular here in Georgia Bullldog country, of course.  And he always has several varieties of fudge on hand - if you can't decide, just ask for a taste! Whenever I sell a property, my clients receive a closing gift from Antique Sweets - a tower of treats that includes truffles, pralines, pecan fudge, plus bulldog bites. Whether you are looking for a historic home, a horse farm, or just a nice home in a great community - consider Madison Georgia and give me a call.

Life in a small town has been pretty easy to get used to after years of urban and then suburban living.  Its the "knowing" and "being known" that feels good - especially during the holiday season with my dear daughter living 400 miles away. Madison Georgia is not a big place - fewer than 5000 people live in town and about 18,000 in the whole county.  But its quality, not quantity that counts. Today the weather is terrible - cold and rainy - great day to stay indoors with a fire burning and a kettle on the stove.  But today my day is full of to-dos. Started my day with coffee with a good friend, then on to her son's pre-school holiday pageant at the local Presbyterian church.  Gotta love those young voices belting out traditional favorites.  Reception after, where I caught up with her hu...

The local foods movement in my town is about to take another step forward with the opening of a nerw creamery. Christel Greene of Greendale Farm stopped by today to share an update on her progress.  She just returned from a great cheese-makers workshop, and is brimming with ideas for her first product line of fresh-made local cheeses.  A neighboring dairy will supply the raw milk, and she'll be mixing up batches of gourmet cheese as soon as her creamery meets with final approval. She'll have a retail shop on site, and hopes to offer cheese-making workshops, plus monthly dinners featuring locally grown foods. Madison Georgia is home to a growing local foods movement, including Johnston Dairy - source of amazingly tasty slow-pasturized milk, and Big Sandy Creek Dairy -  which proudly call...
