Examples of tanks for water catchment, or rainwater harvesting, seen on Maui Hawaii Previously I explained how water catchment works, here in Hawaii.  Now here are some examples of tanks.  Most of these are the corrugated metal tanks built by Scafco.  These are the same structures used to store grain on large farms. This camo-paint one is mine and yes, I painted it. Isn't is a beauty?  The close up picture shows the little hatch where you can peek in to see your lovely rain water.  And there's usually a ladder in case you want to climb to the top and feel like the king of the world.  This one is 12,000 gallons.  It's built of one "ring" which is made up of 8 sections bolted together.  It sits on a concrete slab.  Inside is a plastic liner.  The lid is overkill, but it's nice to have a g... 10/23/2012

How does water catchment work in Haiku Maui Hawaii? In some parts of Maui and the other Hawaiian islands, there is no county water service, no water lines.  The nature of the terrain and I suppose the low population density makes it unfeasible for the development of new lines.  There are no plans to provide this basic utility. In rainier areas, such as Haiku or Hana and Nahiku it's not unusual to have catchment water as your primary household water source.  There's plenty of rainfall to supply all the water you need, provided you have enough storage capacity.  You will be able to get a building permit for your Maui home if you use water catchment. Tuesday's Treasures - Kona girl meets little brother Bandit in Haiku Maui My little 4 year old JRT got to meet her 3 year old little brother from the same parents.  Here they are meeting for the first time at a Haiku Maui property for sale.  After a few sniffs and growls (on Kona's part) they were off and running and romping through the trails like wild animals.  What a lot of energy these guys burned up in about 20 minutes of frantic exploring. They are so similar looking you would amost think they are twins... haha.  They are the same size and shape and have very similar markings.  Jack Russell Terriers are so much fun! SOLD in Haiku Maui HI 96708 - first week of Sept 2012 4 residential properties sold this past week in Haiku Maui: 655B Kulike Road sold for $226,000 which was way over the asking price of $159,000.  It was a bank owned residential condo that needed a lot of work to make it livable.  Really nice location though.  This one had a feeding frenzy when it hit the market because the area is desirable.  1.3 acres but a lot of it was unusable. Tuesday's Treasures - white carrots grown in my Haiku Maui garden Have you ever grown white carrots?  Not parsnips, and not daikon, these are true carrots but they're not orange.  They came in a seed mix of purple, orange and white carrots, by Renee's Garden seed company.  Since planting them, I have only seen a few of the purple ones earlier on, as I was thinning them.  These white carrots were the most robust and I think they out competed the poor purple cohorts, ending up as the largest ones in the patch.  I can see there are some orange ones in the ground still, but not nearly as big as these!  Just picked today. Haiku Maui HI 96708 Real Estate update - what sold in July 2012? 5 single family homes sold in Haiku last month: 84 S. Maui's wild orchid - growing in Haiku Maui HI 96708 This is one of the native wild orchids that grows by the roadsides in Haiku Maui.  It's only a small plant and before it flowers you would hardly notice it as there are only a few long leaves.  They say that if these orchids can be found it must be a healthy ecosystem as they are very sensitive. Cultivated orchids are big business on Maui and you can find many retail stores selling a huge variety.  I like to visit the nurseries where they grow them since they are very knowledgable about which type will do best in your area.  Maui has a lot of microclimates and there are orchids suited for each district.
