Haiku Maui HI 96708 - vacant land market update Feb 2018Here's a quick report of the real estate market activity in my part of the island, Haiku. It covers a large area and there is so much diversity that it's really hard to make any comparisons, but if you follow the market you might find some interesting bits. At this point, it looks like sales volume is up from last year, and maybe even prices are up. Obviously there is a lot of inventory of large parcels and expensive parcels.  If you can afford these prices, there are some really great buys to be had along the north shore.What sold in 2017? - 33 parcels of land sold, priced from $293,000 to $1,725,000 - average price was $483,323 and the median sale price was $400,000 - lot size varied from just under 1/4 acre to over 31 acres - 9 ... 02/28/2018

Purple and white eggplants from my Haiku Maui gardenFor a while at the end of summer my eggplants were going off!  This year we even had some white ones that did well.  They come in a lot of shapes and sizes and colors too.  Here in Hawaii the long purple eggplant can be found in most markets.  I wouldn't say eggplant is my favorite vegetable to eat, but they are fun to grow and they look so beautiful when they are all shiny and plump.Eggplants do well in the Haiku Maui climate, and will grow for a long time, making it worthwhile to have a few plants on hand all the time.  In Japan it's considered good luck to have eggplant for the New Year... maybe it's just something that's easy to have growing in the winter months?Let me be your guide to finding a Haiku property for sale.When life gi... 12/09/2017

Would you buy a coconut from this man on the side of the road? He's wielding a big knife and wearing an eye patch, looking a lot like a pirate!Fresh coconuts for sale in Haiku MauiI had to stop just to get some pictures, and I did buy a coconut while I watched him open it with his machete right in front of me.  It was worth it - the coconut water was sweet and refreshing, and I was thirsty.  He was enterprising enough to be there selling his coconuts and I didn't mind helping him out with a few dollars.  I think he was doing pretty good business this day with the sun shining and lots of cars going by. An opened coconut ready for drinkingIf you've never tasted a freshly cracked coconut full of coconut water, then you are really missing one of the good things in life.  Put it on your buck... 11/22/2017

These new chicks will be laying eggs in the spring in Haiku Maui.  We're not waiting until spring to get some new chicks, we're getting them started now so we'll have eggs in time for Easter 2018.  It takes about 6 months before they start to lay.  These are White Rocks and Ameraucanas, and there are many more types of egg laying breeds.Starter home for little chickens, Haiku MauiSomebody in Waikapu had ordered day old chicks and had a lot extra, so my husband picked up 8 about a week ago.  He built them a nice outdoor cage with wheels on one end so they can be moved around the lawn as needed.  It's called a "chicken tractor" and they get to enjoy the fresh grass and see the sunshine every day.  This is just their starter home until they're big enough to move to the chicken house down t... 10/07/2017

My gardens in Haiku Maui are always growing and we usually have a series of ongoing garden patches, so there will always be something to harvest.  Ideally we'll start a new section every couple of months, but in the depth of winter we just let it all go to give ourselves a break.  New plants are started from seeds on a regular basis, or whenever I remember to do it.  I'm lucky to have a farmer husband who will prepare the soil and add all the organic amendments, and leaves it to me to get creative with the growing.The potting bench where the seeds get started.The current garden is very full and I'm picking 2 kinds of beans, 2 kinds of sweet peppers, 3 kinds of HOT peppers, assorted salad greens, eggplants, tomatillos, cherry tomatoes, bok choy, chard, basil and cilantro.  Still to come ... 08/27/2017
