UPDATE - THE GREEK OVEN CLOSED IN JUNE 2018 - THEY MOVED BACK TO GREECE. We have been eagerly waiting for The Greek Oven to open up in downtown Haiku, in the Aloha Aina Center on Maui.  This most recent addition to the food scene is a nice little shop right across from Nuka and next to Veg Out.  Obviously they serve Greek food, and baked goods, and strive to feel like an authentic eatery on a Greek island! Inside The Greek Oven, Haiku MauiUPDATE - THE GREEK OVEN CLOSED IN JUNE 2018 - THEY MOVED BACK TO GREECE.Today was a lunch date so we headed up there to see how good the food is.  We shared a traditional Spanakopita spinach pie and a beef kebab pita.  It was so good I could have eaten it all myself, but that would be piggish!  So, we got some baklavas to bring home for later.  The fla... 04/28/2017

Spring flowers on Maui - Yes we do have seasons in Hawaii, and you notice different trees and flowers that bloom at different times of the year.  You may not have heard of ti (pronounced tea) leaves, but they are common and almost every yard will have them.  The leaves grow all year and have many uses in the home and kitchen.  Wrap food in them for cooking, or serve food on them as makeshift paper plates.   A flowering ti plant in Haiku MauiHawaiians considered them good luck and would plant them in every corner of the yard.  You can't really have too many, and they come in a wide variety of colors and shapes.  The common green ti is everywhere and mostly seen at luaus decorating the tables or stage.  Bright red ones are beautiful, as are the variegated ones.In the spring they all bloss... 03/16/2017

Haiku Maui HI 96708 - vacant land sales in 2016 - updateWhat was the real estate market doing in 2016 when it comes to vacant land on Maui's north shore?  There were plenty of great listings to choose from, and the number of sales stayed pretty stable compared to last year, but dollar amount was way up. This Maui market update will explain recent sales activity and pricing.Sold in 2016: 21 parcels of raw land closed between Jan. 1 and Dec. 31 2016 - actually there were no closings in November or December. About the same as 2015. prices ranged from $243,000 to $3,983,740.  The lowest price was for a CPR'd lot of almost an acre, with no water meter but it did have power and cable and an ocean view.  The highest price was for 182 unimproved acres on the ocean side of the Hana Highway which... 01/20/2017

 Maui County buys a big chunk of the North Shore in Haiku, and promises to make it open space for public use.  This is great news for people who want to watch the surfing and windsurfing action at the Jaws surf break in Peahi.  This location has been growing in popularity as more and more people want to challenge the famous waves.  These days, big wave surfing events are being held which really puts a spotlight on the location.  The amount of traffic that comes with an event is incredible, and it's not safe to drive down the rutted roads.  Currently people park their cars up at the Hana Highway and walk over a mile to the site, or get shuttled up and down by those who are able to drive on the rough terrain of the old pineapple fields.On Sept. 20, 2016, Maui County paid $9,495,000 for 26... 11/16/2016

I'm showing off my red asparagus beans we've grown in Haiku Maui. They're also known as "yard long beans" but I have never been able to get one quite that long!  The pods usually grow as pairs, with the occasional set of three beans pods.  I like to let a few of the pods go all the way to maturity so I can have some seeds for the next crop. Otherwise, you pick them before they get too fat. Asparagus beans can also be green, but it's kind of fun to have the red ones because they really stand out on the vines, and they look good cooked too.  They keep their color after cooking, unlike some other varieties of purple beans.  Cook like any other pole been or bush bean.These beans are so easy to grow... just poke half a dozen in the ground and put 3 bamboo poles in a tripod around them and le... 10/07/2016

The Twin Falls trails and fruit stand, on the road to Hana Maui, is becoming very popular with visitors and residents.  Just past the 2 mile marker, on the right, is where this farm stand is. This little tourist attraction keeps on expanding the parking area along the highway to accomodate all the traffic, but it's still inadequate.  Please keep in mind that the road through here is the main highway, and it's not a parking lot.  If you're trying to park, you may have to drive by and turn around where it's convenient, instead of just stopping in the middle of the road while you wait for a spot!  You can walk up to to some pools and waterfalls on a pretty easy trail.  Wear some good shoes, and bring water, a hat, and sunscreen.  There's beautiful tropical plants and so much nature to appr... 09/13/2016
