Roughly 50,000 years ago, a single moss spore found its way to the Kohala Mountains. That spore, from Sphagnum palustre, cloned itself, spreading across the region, but never leaving Kohala, plant ecologist Eric Karlin said, until people began transporting it to other parts of the Big Island in the 1900s, and later to Oahu. Over the past four months I've thought of participating in a challenging physical, and mental experience. It's been on my mind like a child waiting to open a present, the anticipation and unknown was a driving force for me to attain my goal. I've thought about this experience with long awaited hope, wondering if I could really do it. I'm sure you're wondering what I so much wanted to do so badly, well today I finally did it. I drove up to the high mountain slope in Hawaii this morning, wanting to be part of the group that could say, "I did it!"  I rode down the gulches in Kohala on the Big Island of Hawaii, the birthplace of King Kamehameha, on a zip line from the top of the mountain and tree tops. Now I can be officially called a "zip chick".  Our zip line adventure began with us check...

As summer 2011 arrived, homes in Maliu Ridge, the upscale community above Hawi, North Kohala, began to find buyers.  In May I reported that the Maliu Ridge home under contract was the first to sell since January.  Since in a typical year, two homes in this area, that did not bode well for the other five homes for sale.  But suddenly it seems that buyers have recognized the Maliu Ridge price war brought these Maliu Ridge homes with their big ocean views and peaceful rural Hawi location into "best buy" range! A 2,430 sq ft home on over an acre at the bottom of a cul-de-sac sold for only $612,000. The home built in 2000 needed some cosmetic renovation for most current tastes, but has amazing views. An REO (foreclosure) of 2,281 sq ft on almost 3 acres is under contract, asking price $691,2...

The start of a real estate purchase in my neighborhoods near Hawi often begins like this. You are a visitor to the Big Island staying at one of the luxury resorts of the Kohala Coast, and eventually drive the 30 minutes to North Kohala. Wow! You fall in love with the old Hawai'i charm of Hawi and Kapa'au, or the beautiful scenery and history you encounter on a zipline or ATV excursion. Captivating sunset lights up the sky below Puakea Ranch estate home for sale (MLS 235911) for $2,000,000 Heading out of town from Hawi back down the coast, you pull over by the side of the road to watch the sunset, parked in front of the gates of Puakea Bay Ranch or the Ranch at Puakea on the ocean side of the road, or next to the horses and cattle grazing on the Puakea Ranch side of the road. At any of t...

Despite the price war at the upscale Maliu Ridge subdivision near Hawi in North Kohala, the home that is showing under contract today is the first to sell since January! It will be interesting to see what the final sold price is on this 2,430 sq ft home with big ocean views and all furniture included; list price is $699,000 but it was in competition with a nearby home of similar square footage and ocean views priced at $649,000: Both of these homes are on a little over an acre.  For someone wanting a 2,000+ sq ft home near Hawi on 3 acres with paddocks for horses (or a pet goat or sheep?), the REO (foreclosure) is still on the market at a reduced price of $691,200. This Maliu Ridge home is one of only five residential properties with offers on them in the Hawi, area, two of which are fo...

An old show tune kept running through my mind as our land-only North Kohala real estate broker caravan wandered from Makapala to Hawi recently.  And if I tell you the tune, you might wonder: What does North Kohala at the tip of the Island of Hawai'i have in common with Camelot?   The rain must never fall till after sundown.  Although visitors are often struck when they round the corner into Hawi, North Kohala at how the color of the land changes from straw brown to lush green, our days are generally clear.  Most nights, I sleep to the pitter-patter of rain drops. July and August cannot be too hot. Turning the corner from the west-facing side of the island to the north-facing shores also brings us into the zone where trade winds caress us most days of the year. Even in the hottest months...

Cinco de Mayo -Hawaiian Style???  Does that sound like a plate of mahi mahi tacos to you?  You might be surprised to know that in the diverse mix of ethnicities and nationalities that is modern Hawai'i, Mexico plays a role, especially here on the Big Island of Hawai'i. The first link between what is now Mexico and what is now the Island of Hawai'i in the State of Hawai'i dates back to the early 1800s, when the first horses and vacqueros arrived to help work the cattle that had been brought to the islands by George Vancouver as a gift to the king. The Hawai'ian word for "cowboy" paniolo is a version of the word espanole or Spaniard (as the Spanish moved through Mexico and California with their cattle and horsemanship traditions and from there across the Pacific).  Today on the Big Island...

This year we have Earth Day falling the same week as Easter, which has made for a busy time in our little rural community of Kohala on the Big Island.  A newer tradition is to celebrate Earth Day with the Trash Bash in downtown Hawi.  Usually it includes both a Saturday night Art Show (where all the entries must be made of trash or recycled materials) and a Sunday morning Fashion Show (again with all the costumes of what would usually be considered trash). Besides the art, there is live music and heavy pupu's, not to mention generous samples of fudge made on premises at the Coffee Mill and sold upstairs at the Kava Bar (where tourists and locals gather daily for coffee, wholesome breakfast and lunch goodies, and Tropical Dreams Ice Cream). Earth Day stretches to Earth Month this year wi...
