Last month, I had the opportunity to attend Pineapple Grill's Winemaker's Dinner with the owner of Landmark Winery, Michael Colhoun.  The food was some of the best I'd had on Maui, and I enjoyed listening to the family's history in winemaking. Can a 10 year-old girl Save the World?  Well, maybe she can't save it, but she can change it.  One animal at a time.  My friend Stuart, a local police officer, told me about his daughter, Kaylee, who had started her own Retirement Stables here on Maui.  She came to him with an idea: she wanted to provide a safe place for animals that might otherwise face an uncertain future.  With her father's support and encouragement, Kaylee has taken in dozens of animals--horses, sheep, pigs, goats, and chickens.  In fact, employees of one of the local farms chipped in to purchase a goat that was going to be sold, so that they could bring it to Kaylee to ensure a long, happy retirement in West Maui.   Kaylee's father is as dedicated as she is, working extra shifts to supply the ever-expanding menager... 02/04/2010

I had the opportunity to stop by Duke's new Beach Houserestaurant at the Honua Kai Beach Resort.  It's a lovely open air dining, with a spectacular view.  The decor has a laid back, island casual style perfect for Maui.  The original Duke's is located on Waikiki, and is a part of TS Restaurants, famous here on Maui for local favorites like Hula Grill, Leilani's, and Kimo's.  I've heard that Duke's Beach House will be open for lunch starting the 15th, dinner on the 19th, and breakfast on the 21st!  Call 808-662-2900 for reservations. 12/13/2009

Each year, the Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua kicks off the holiday season with a festive tree lighting ceremony.  It's one of my favorite events to attend, and draws visitors and kama'aina from across the island.  This year, the theme will be "At Home in the Islands."  The evening includes live entertainment, keiki hula dancers, and a visit from Santa Clause. Kapalua, Maui: In preparation for the SBS Championship, the Plantation Course will be cart path only starting on Monday, December 14th.  Additionally for play on December 30 and 31st, the last tee time of the day will be at 12 noon.  The Plantation Course will be closed to all play, beginning Friday, January 1st.  The SBS Championship will take place January 4-10, 2010.  Approximately 34 PGA professionals will be competing for their share of a $5.6 million purse, and the first title of the 2010 season.
