The Lahaina News Reports: Developer Brian Hoyle of Newport Hospital Corp. on Monday filed an updated Certificate of Need (CON) for the West Maui Hospital and Medical Center.  A partner in numerous Mainland hospitals, Hoyle said in a statement that the application to build a $45.75 million, 25-bed acute emergency hospital and 40-bed skilled nursing facility in West Maui is on track and moving forward.

Well, for the purpose of this post, I will equate affordable with the lowest priced active listings. Thus, the most affordable home on West Maui is currently listed at $425,000, located in Lahainaluna neighborhood. If you can afford to upgrade though, there are 18 listing priced between $425,000 and $700,000. Most of the homes in this price range have a living area of aproximately 1,200 sf and sit on lost that are not larger than 5,000 sf. The Realtors Association of Maui's Wishing Well Program recently presented a check for $2,500 to Lahainaluna High School's Project Graduation, an event promoted throughout the nation to support drug-, alcohol- and tobacco-free celebrations on graduation night. RAM developed the Wishing Well Program to fulfill its mission of the education and development of young children by providing enhanced funding and items needed to Maui's public schools.   A "Wish List" with what's needed on a regular and ongoing basis is created for each school, posted to the RAM website.  West Maui Realtors continue to help the community that they live and work in.

Kapalua Resort invites women to spend their Saturday afternoons enjoying the game of golf and making new friends at the Bay Course.  The Ladies Social Golf League kicks off on Saturday, June 7, at 3:30 p.m. and will continue every Saturday through September at The Bay Course, voted one of the "Best Golf Courses for Women" by Golf for Women Magazine. Weekly sessions cost $40 and include pupus at Pineapple Grill restaurant, specialty prizes from Kapalua Resort and a 45-minute short game monthly golf clinic at Kapalua Golf Academy. The league's nine-hole format is designed for women golfers of all ages and all levels of play. Groups are limited to 20 players, and preregistration is required.

For having a year round growing season and some of the best soil in the world, it is surprising how much of our produce comes from outside of Hawaii. With rising fuel costs, the importance of locally grown food is becoming even more apparent. There are a handful of natural foods and small grocery stores around Maui that feature local and organic produce. These stores are augmented by a few farmer's markets throughout the island. That being said, when you go in many of the island grocery stores, you will find produce from throughout Central and South America.   Driving to Lahaina for lunch Just yesterday I found myself on a sudden drive over to Lahaina town, on the west side of Maui.  We had to pick up a piece of equipment, for a backhoe, and after business was done, we wound up on Front Streetin Lahaina for a bite of lunch.  This colorful historic old whaling town has plenty of shops and restaurants.  We ate at Bubba Gump's, right on the seawall with oceanfront dining.  Why didn't I take a picture of the pear/berry salad I had?  It was yummy. That's Front Street that has the seawall, and the old buildings along the shore.  The huge tree makes shade over the open air market that sells trinkets to the tourists. This is the question...In a really Shakesperean way! For those who have not heard of this concept ( after all, it is used only in Hawaii and Utah, to the best of my knowledge), leasehold is a type of ownership. Most typically, when one owns a condo, for instance, they own the condo itself ( that is the space between the walls) and also a share of the common elements (pool, roof, hallways and LAND). This is called fee simple ownership. In the case of a leasehold property, one does not own a share of that land that the condo sits on. Thus, one has to " rent" that land from whoever owns it and pay a lease rent. This lease agreement is valid for so many years from today and the rent is renegotiated every so many years. This week the west side caravan was limited to properties in Lahaina and Kaanapali.  The information I picked up today ran the gamut from low end short sales in Kahana, to high end short sales in Kaanapali to higher end, top dollar ocean front luxury at Puamana in Lahaina.  Whether you are an investor, first time home buyer or just looking for a "reasonably" priced property on the Lahaina side, you should take a look at Kahana Manor.  Today I heard about a short sale there.  It is a 1 bedroom, 1 bath listed at $291K.  It is a short sale, so it could require some patience.  But it could be an excellent buy on the west side.For those interested in something a bit more upscale, there is trouble in paradise.  There is a lot at the Summit, an exclusive neighborhood, which is rumored to be da...
