Buyer restrictions have been removed for Lihue's affordable housing called Kamamalu.  These brand-new, 2 bedroom condominiums are now available to all buyers including investors.  This project was an offset to the Kauai Lagoons luxury condos & homes and was intended to provide affordable housing to Kauai residents.  Demand was less than expected and less than 1/3 were sold as affordable units. Those of us living on Kauai are accustomed to seeing Pride of America docked in Nawiliwili Harbor once a week during its Kauai stop on its Hawaii cruises.  Today I saw a new girl in town and on taking a closer look, saw it was the Golden Princess.  A little research shows she's quite majestic indeed with 710 cabins, 4 pools, 3 dining rooms, and a capacity of 2600 passengers and 1,000 crew. It's a 14-day cruise with an itinerary starting in Los Angeles with stops on the Big Island, Oahu, Kauai, Maui, Ensenada, and back to Los Angeles.  Here she is in profile.   Aloha!

 Garden Island Newspaper article This week the Kauai Planning Commission approved Safeway's request to build Lihue's Hokulei Village shopping plaza in 2 phases insteat of one.  The economic slowdown had made finding tenants for the complete project difficult. According to today's Garden Island newspaper, Phase I will include a 2nd Safeway supermarket on the island, another major store (not named), 4 restaurants, 2 shopping complexes, a bank and a gas station.  While we love our local owned and operated grocerers, some food items can not be purchased there so the Safeway will be a welcome addition to many.  Phase I is scheduled to be completed in 2012.  Road improvements currently underway on Kaumuali‘i Highway, though not directly attributed to this project, will aid traffic flow in the...

Time at the beach provides a great break from the routine, even if it's only for an hour.  I headed down to Lihue's Kalapaki Beach yesterday and took this video while there. Kalapaki Bay and it's crescent sandy beach is conveniently located right in Kauai's major city, Lihue. The narrow entrance from the ocean is shared by ships headed to and from nearby Nawiliwili Harbor. Here one sees sunbathers, surfers, stand-up paddle boarders, and a mix of other activities. For several months workers have been busy erecting a new building in Lihue across from the Kukui Mall.  There are all kinds of rumors about what it will be in spite of a credit union sign out front.  I did a little research and indeed it will be a new ofrice for Kauai Community Federal Credit Union.  It will feature partially underground parking on the first level and offices in the rest.  Occupancy is planned for Fall 2010.  At 21,000+ square feet it's certainly a large building but no it's not a new Safeway as rumor would have it.  It's designed to be "green" and will include photovoltaic panels on the roof.
