August 2024 update from Maui - 1 year after the firesI thought it would be timely to do an update on the situation on Maui.  I'll send you to my other blog so I don't have to repeat myself.  A lot has changed but a lot still needs to be done, and it's way more that I can say here quickly. Our tourist industry really took a hit over the past year, with visitor numbers down about 27% they say.  Thankfully those visitors are spending heavily and that helps... thank you! There's a lot of drama about what's happening and what's not happening, as you can imagine.  People are being housed and things are progressing, but it's a tough situation to just move on from.  I am blessed to live far from all of it, but still feel the energy and also the fear, since parts of Maui continue to have wild fire...

Have you seen these cool Maui properties for sale? - 2 videosI want to share these short videos of some really nice Maui homes for sale that I've seen and recorded lately.  These are both on 2 acres, but completely different.  One is all about farming, and the other is all about fun.1. 555 Kuakini Loop, Kahakuloa MauiIt's a single level home with great ocean views, on 2 acres.  The celebrity owner loves to farm, and there are hundreds of edible kinds of plants here including many "canoe plants".  These owners are really motivated to move off island and the price has been lowered a few times already.  It's priced very well, and under $2,000,000.  Can you help them with their dream? Now on the other hand, if you have a big family or lots of friends, and you love to entertain...2. 1780 Kauh...

The February Maui Lifestyle newsletter for your convenience I'm posting a link to a newsletter I send out once a month, highlighting the Maui lifestyle.  This month there was a lot about the local food and food security.  We live on an island, and it's something we think about a lot since so much of our "food" is imported.  The reality is that many good foods are grown here and we should be concentrating on eating more of that, and less of the stuff they ship in.  Much of the imported stuff is processed and packaged and not all that healthy anyway.A broker's open at a local musician's home/farm in Kahakuloa was a real treat because he's also a farmer who loves his community.  We toured the farm, ate a nice lunch of local foods, did an art project, and sang along with George.  You can re...

Tropical flowers on Maui are always a hitI've been a little lazy about blogging and it's time to change that!  I know from seeing the stats that tropical flowers get some eyeballs, especially in the winter months, so here's some eye candy for those of you in the colder climates.   First pic is of orchids growing on a tree, which is pretty easy to do in many parts of the island. The fragrant gardenia will bloom in the spring and fill the air with it's lovely scent. These orchids were growing in Lahaina Maui, before the fire event of last year. The Queen Emma spider lily is a huge flower that can be over 12" across, but with no real scent. And the bright orange hibiscus is a real head turner when you see a large bush covered in blooms.  The blooms only last one day, but there's always more to...

Haiku Maui pole house on acreage, with BIG viewsShowing off my new Haiku Maui listing that just hit the market, and it's getting a lot of attention.  It's a 2-story pole house, very solidly built with quality components and finishes.  And the views...... are outstanding, with so much ocean and greenery!28 S. Honokala Rd. unit A is the main house portion of a 2 part CPR development.  CPR means Condominium Property Regime whereby a larger agricultural property is divided into (usually) 2 parts, A and B, with dedicated land for each part.  There are governing documents that explain all the details, but think of it more like a subdivision of sorts.  In this case, unit A comes with 2.499 acres of land that can be used for farming.  Unit B comes with 1.74 acres of usable farm land.28 S Honoka...

Maui HI - fire disaster recovery September updateI know everyone wants an update about the state of things here on Maui.  Honestly, it's out of my regular sphere of travel, and we haven't been over there as looky-loos so I have no first hand knowledge. There's plenty of images online, and that's a real eye opener.  I think it's still going to hit me hard when I actually see it.  The outpouring of help and financial aid has been tremendous, and it seems to be improving every day in every way.  I'm really proud to call Maui my home.Since I send out newsletters twice a month, I decided to share some of that...  here's some of the things that were included in the Sept 1 newsletter:(BTW, That's the Lahaina Gateway Center pictured above - a hub for supplies to be dropped off and picked up.  T...

Steven has had many close friends who have lost everything. As you know, last week Steven’s beloved Maui experienced the deadliest US wildfire in modern history, with a death toll of 111 and counting.  The Featured Image (above) is from our balcony at the Maui MarriottMaui Reflections...PrefaceOriginally a tiny fishing village, Lahaina (Hawaiian: “Cruel Sun”) was chosen as the royal capital in 1820 by King Kamehameha II. It remained the capital until 1845, when Honolulu, on Oahu island, replaced it in that role. The Wainee Church Cemetery is sacred to islanders as a burial place for Hawaiian monarchs.Reflections...In 2001, Rick and I purchased two weeks of Marriott Ocean Club Ownership.  It is a two-bedroom ocean-front unit.  It can be split into a one-bedroom and lockout to get four weeks a year.  This is how we used it for many years until I started working as a Sedona REALTOR®. After purchasing, we made plans to visit at the end of September 2001.  Well, we all know what happened....

Can't Believe Lahaina is Gone.(Only picture I will post of the fire, so sad what happened to our beloved Lahaina and island)Words can not describe the destruction, loss of property, and lives that this storm raged on Maui. While Lahaina was burned to the ground, upcountry had its own fires causing damage and burning down homes. My daughter has a couple of horses and got the call to help move 16 horses in Kula out of the path of raging fires, winds were blowing 65 mph. So off we went to borrow a truck and trailer and so started the next couple of days getting involved in any way we could help. With the help of others ended up moving 16 horses to safety. Many of our friend's homes burned down, lots of lives were lost, and they are still counting. But you do see amazing people stepping up t...

Maui fire update from the north shore of MauiOur recent Hawaiian disaster has made ripples across the globe and it seems everyone wants to know if we're safe, so I hope this helps.Yes we are safe in Haiku Maui because it's on the windward side, upwind of the fires, and generally green and lush due to rain.  Maui has been suffering from a drought, but not the whole island.  Hana, Kipahulu, Nahiku, Huelo, Haiku - these are some of the wetter and more jungly parts where wild fires are not expected or normal, and even in a drought we stay green. On the other side of the island, it's dry, it's hot and it's more densely built up and populated.  With the super high winds we experienced earlier this week, it became the perfect conditions for fires to spread quickly.  Firefighters were busy putti...

NBC Host: Breaking news out of Hawaii, where ravaging wildfires engulf Maui. Clint Hanson of Maui Real Estate Radio recorded this drone footage of a terrifying scene as it developed through the night and into the early morning hours of today. Clint Hansen joins me now. He has been driving around, trying to help people and bring them supplies. First of all, good for you. But what are you seeing? How bad is it?Clint Hanson: Thank you for having me. This is the worst I've ever seen any fire on the island. While we do experience some inclement weather from time to time, Maui is known for its good weather. It's been 180 years since a hurricane hit us. But when summer comes, and things dry out, combined with high winds, a perfect storm occurs, and that's precisely what's been happening in th...

Just a reminder about my oceanfront Haiku estate located along the beautiful north shore of Maui, in the Huelo area.  An exceptional luxury listing! It's a GREEN home. This 2 acre residential estate is off the grid, with it's very own power and water supply, plus high speed fiber optics for internet.  You can hunker down here in total comfort, while growing your own food and enjoying ocean access to the nearby Ho'olawa Bay.  The community here is friendly and welcoming.  It's my neighborhood and we love it here in Haiku where things stay green year round.Of course you know Hawai'i Life can pay a referral fee to Realtors from other states if they send a buyer... what a great opportunity for agents.Click HERE for the full MLS info, with 50 pictures and other links.Wait, that's not all - we...
