Valentine's weekend is a big movie weekend, at least judging by the star power out there this weekend it is.  Writing this post on new movies and events in Iowa City and Coralville for this weekend February 12 through February 14 it became clear that Valentine's weekend is a very important weekend on the calender - Probably more important here than anywhere else in the world I've lived. Just carry on reading and you'll see what I mean... The first of the movies you can catch at the Coral Ridge Mall Movie Theatre in Coralville and the Sycamore Mall Cinema in Iowa City is The Wolfman - This is of course based on the classic Universal film that launched a legacy of horror. It stars Benicio Del Toro, Emily Blunt, Hugo Weaving and Anthony Hopkins, who I am proud to say comes from the same co...

537 Active Listings 60 Under Contract 4 Homes Sold Feb 1 - Feb 6 7.4 Months of inventory on the market The absorption rate in Iowa City is just over 7 months, so we still have a buyers market. 6 months of inventory of homes on the market is considered neutral and less than 6 months trending to a sellers market. The absorption rate is a great tool for sellers to figure out how the market is trending. Here's a link to a post I wrote a while back with pretty detailed info about the absorption rate.

Exciting weekend coming up as we look forward to Super Bowl Weekend. While you're preparing for the big game there's still time for a trip to the movies or take in a show before Sunday.  If you're looking for choices, this is what I've come across in Iowa City and Coralville for this weekend February 5 through February 7...  Two new movies to share with you this week. The first is From Paris with Love - A deceiving title I think... I would have expected a romantic comedy and I would have been wrong... It's an action adventure movie with John Travolta and Jonathan Rhys Myers. John Travolta plays a trigger happy CIA agent with his green side kick (Jonathan Rhys Myers) who are running around the streets of Paris causing mayhem as they try to prevent a terror attack. John Travolta is great ...

Another week bites the dust and as we head for another chilly weekend in Iowa City and Coralville. Cabin fever? Let's see what we've got going on in Iowa City and Coralville with my weekly round up of movies and events for January 29 through January 31.As always, I'll start with new movie releases. Slow week this with just 2 new movies to share with you. The first is vintage Mel Gibson in Edge of Darkness. After the death of his daughter Thomas Craven, a Boston detective (Mel Gibson), takes to the street looking for vengeance. A classic revenge movie by all accounts. If you like Mel Gibson you probably won't be disappointed. The next movie is When in Rome starring Kristen Bell. As the title suggests, she's in Italy and guess what, she has a man problem! Actually, more precisely after vis...

What's the biggest misconception about Iowa City? That would be the rural image folks have about our area. As someone who relocated to the Iowa City area 10 years ago I have plenty to compare this to and I can tell you that it ain't so...That we have a vibrant college town with absolutely loads going on. In fact there is so much to do I decided it's worthy of a series. I figure my best plan is to break down all the things you can do in this surprising town into categories and will start with theaters... Coral Ridge Mall Movie Theatre is, as the name suggests, located at the Mall in Coralville. It's a pretty big theater with 10 screens and stadium seating. Tel: 319-625-1010Sycamore Cinema is located on the east side of Iowa City at Sycamore Mall. It has 12 state-of-the-art auditoriums an...

What do you think the chances are of your home selling at an open house? Probably not great. At least not here in the Iowa City area. (I represent sellers in the Iowa City real estate market and can only speak for my area of course). Selling a home is all about getting the right buyer in the right home at the right time. Seems to me the stars need to be aligned just right for all of that to happen on a day that you and your agent choose!  Does that mean if you have a home on the market you shouldn't bother with open houses? That depends. Can you expect a lot of buyer traffic? Will it mess up your day completely if you have to vacate the property for two hours on a Sunday afternoon? Those are the things you should look at. (Not necessarily in that order). Now what does buyer traffic have ...

The weekend is almost here - again! Amazing how time flies. Seems like it comes around quicker every week...  Once again it's time for my weekly round up of movies and events in Iowa City and Coralville for January 22 through January 24.Not a blockbuster weekend this weekend. I have 3 new movies to share with you. The first (and probably the best) is Extraordinary Measures, starring Harrison Ford and Brendan Fraser. It's a film based on a true story about a father, (Brendan Fraser) getting together with a brilliant, but unconventional scientist (Harrison Ford) to save his dying children. Definitely a tearjerker, so don't forget those tissues! Then we have Legion with Paul Bettany and Dennis Quaid. This is a movie that's probably not going to go over well with everyone - A horror movie w...

What to watch out for when you make an offer on a condo in Iowa City So you've found the condo that's perfect for you and are all set to make an offer. You'll write up a purchase agreement and here in the Iowa City area we have an addendum where you get 5 calender days to review the homeowners condominium association documents. If you find something that doesn't suit you, then you can walk away from the deal. Here are a couple of things you should REALLY be watching out for:Along with the condominium bylaws, (that you are going to read, even if they are "put you to sleep material"), you absolutely need to see a copy of the last couple of years financial statements. You want to know that the association is solvent and can pay for lawn care, snow removal, trash removal and other regular b...

The weekend is upon us again. Time for my round up of movies and events in Iowa City and Coralville for January 15 through January 17.First, let's look at new movie releases. Two new movies to share with you this week. The first is The Book of Eli, with the movie-drawing magnet Denzel Washington. Will he topple Avatar from the top spot? I'm not sure, but I doubt it. A wastelands movie with Denzel up against top notch fantasy fiction... I'd say we have a face-off this weekend. It will be interesting to see who comes out on top. Whatever happens with those two movies is irrelevant to the success of the other movie out this weekend - A movie definitely for kids. The Spy Next Door is an adventure movie with Jackie Chan. It doesn't get very good reviews, but it's not like they've never been ...

Iowa City Real Estate: Don't Pay $59.00 For A Duplicate Warranty Deed   If you live in the Iowa City area you don't need to pay $59.00 for a duplicate warranty deed. Now I'm pretty sure you don't need to pay that anywhere in Iowa or the rest of the country, but since I am only 100% certain of my facts for around here I will limit this post to talking about that. At the beginning of the year it seems there are some shady companies out there wanting to make a fast buck. They send out letters to unsuspecting new home owners offering them "bargain priced" warranty deeds. Every year I get a call from at least one client around this time asking me if they need a warranty deed and whether they should write the check. The answer on both counts is NO. You don't need a warranty deed and if you fo...

Tonight we're going to party like it's 1999... Prince had the right idea and with another decade behind us it's the perfect opportunity to party hard again as we ring out the old decade and step into 2010.Looking for ideas? I have a few for you that caught my eye here in Iowa City and Coralville... The Englert has got quite a show lined up with Public Property, Euforquestra & The Uniphonics. The start of a new decade warrants a big party and their first New Year's Eve Party since reopening in 2004 promises to be a "not to be missed" affair. If you're a regular reader of my blog you'll know there's always something going on at The Mill in Iowa City and naturally New Year's Eve is no exception They're going with an Irish theme and Wylde Nept is playing, (and as we all know, the Irish know ...

It's coming up to the weekend again. And it's a pretty special weekend at that...  Christmas is the one holiday I can say sneaks up on me every time... I know it's coming and am always surprised how quickly it arrives! Never more than this year of course as I move back into my house after my fire, am surrounded by moving boxes and no carpet... It's all good though, it beats the hotel room!Doing my research for my usual weekly look at new movies and events in the area I learned something new today. Initially I was surprised to learn that Christmas Day is typically the busiest day of the year for movie theaters... Then I thought about how going to the movies is a real family affair and figured it made total sense. At any rate, it makes it all the more important for me to get this post out...

It's Friday and just one short week until Christmas. Most of us will have stuff to do in preparation for the holidays, (like shop for instance). On the other hand, you may need a distraction... Maybe you'll find something of interest here with my round up of movies and events in Iowa City and Coralville this weekend December 18 - December 20. As always, I'll start with new movie releases. Two new movies to share with you this week. The first is the highly anticipated AVATAR, James Cameron's first new movie since the Titanic. Now that's a hard act to follow! You can only imagine what the expectation level is on that, can't you? I know it will be a runaway hit with PC Gamers, (like my son), who will appreciate the technical aspect of the movie. From what I've heard, it's a "must see" in 3...

It's Friday and time to take a look at new movies and other events in Iowa City and Coralville. This is what caught my eye this weekend December 11 - December 13.I'll start as I always do with movies. Two movies to tell you about this weekend. I'll start with the movie that you'd be hard pressed to miss when it comes to TV advertising this week. Invictus is a Clint Eastwood production starring two stellar actors, Morgan Freeman and Matt Damon. Morgan Freeman plays the newly elected President Nelson Mandela, who joins forces with the Captain of the African Rugby Team in an effort to unite the country after apartheid as they head for the Rugby World Cup in 1995. What better way to unite a country than through sport? We already knew Nelson Mandela is a very smart man and this just proves i...

Iowa City Police Department's interactive map shows the crime rate in Iowa City neighborhoods  What's the neighborhood like? Folks relocating to Iowa City ask me that all the time. This week I came across an article with info about a really cool interactive map that I think will be helpful to you if you're in the process of relocating to Iowa City and looking for information on crime stats in the area. I'm pretty sure if you live here in Iowa City already you'll find it interesting too, especially if you're thinking of moving anytime soon. I love collecting data, so it impressed the socks off me! The map can be found on the Iowa City website and merges the Iowa City Police Department's Daily Activity Log and the Community Policing Map into a really helpful online tool that gives informa...

It's Friday and time to take a look at new movies and other events in Iowa City and Coralville. These are a few things that caught my eye for this weekend December 4 - December 6.I'll start as I always do with movies. Everybody's Fine looks to be a nice holiday movie with Robert De Niro. He sets off on the holidays to make nice with his children after they all cancel their trip home to see him at Christmas. Don's worry, it's sure to have a nice happy end. If you're looking for something a little meatier, then Brothers might just fit the bill. Tobey Maguire plays a young man who goes missing in action while serving his country as a marine. His younger brother stays home and comforts his wife played by Natalie Portman. You can imagine where this is heading, can't you? Lots of drama in tha...

Coralville Real Estate Market Report November 2009 It's the beginning of the month and time for my Coralville real estate market report for November 2009. The number of homes sold in November in Coralville was up by and amazing 92%. There were 25 homes sold in Coralville in November 2009 compared to 13 homes sold in November 2008. The average price of homes sold in November was $225,136 with an average of 98 days on market. The average price is up by 3% compared to last year when it was $218,246. Coralville is still bucking the trend we have in Iowa City and North Liberty, where the it's the lower priced homes that are selling. I'd say there's a good chance of that continuing and even improving some with the new expanded homebuyer tax credit for repeat buyers. It will be interesting to s...
