Sometimes it pays to park a big, yellow Hummer outside your place of business. That's what stopped us in our tracks tonight as we cruised along Illinois Route 140 in Bethalto, Illinois in search of dinner. The behemoth billboard beckoned us into a place called Country Barbecue situated in a small strip of shops. Always willing to give a new barbecue joint a try, the Goshen Gourmet was smacked with a succulent smoke smell the minute the door to the diminuitive diner was opened. When you visit, just grab a menu and order at the counter outside the kitchen in the back of the restaurant. Some of the top offerings are detailed on a white dry erase board on the wall. Roma's Pizza in Bethalto, IL has definitely been the hottest place to go for pizza for almost 40 years now. It all started in the early 70's when the Pizzo family decided to move to America from their hometown of Palermo, Sicily after a recession had taken its toll on their restaurant business there.                                                                                                                    The story is when they arrived in New York, they dialed an operator in St. Louis and asked her where would be a good town to open up a pizzeria.  She happened to be from Bethalto, and she highly recommended our small town.  As it turns out, they have been very successful here. Weather Vane Ice Cream in Bethalto, IL is a very happening place on a hot summer night.  Bethalto has seen its share of ice cream shops come and go, but I think the Weather Vane is here to stay.  Located on the busy corner of Rt 140 and Prairie St., it's almost impossible to drive by and not stop.   The original store was opened in Granite City in 1960.  Since then, it has seen new owners and two additional locations.  I think their move to Bethalto was a great choice since there wasn't much competition here.  They have the usual ice cream, shakes, slushies, floats, sundaes (24 yummy varieties btw!), but they also have a couple of signature menu items as well.  No matter what kind of diet you're on, rest assured you won't fall off the wagon with their Only 8 Frozen Yogurt.  Made with on... 08/02/2009

Here's a snapshot of the Bethalto real estate market* for the first half of 2008 as compared to the first half of 2007:     71  homes have sold in the first 6 months of 2008  (down 11% from same time last year) Average marketing time was 128 days  (about three weeks longer than same time last year) Average list price - $145,234  (down 3% from last year) Average sales price - $140,013  (down 5% from last year) Bethalto homes are selling, on average, at 96% of list price. The Bethalto real estate market is similar to that of Madison County, in general.  The number of transactions based on the MLS for the first half of this year in Madison County was 1,556 which decreased 16% from the first half of 2007.
