Big Woolly Adventure Race 2007The Big Woolly Adventure Race is back for its 5th year. The Big Woolly will take place in and around Crystal Lake and McHenry County on Sunday, June 10, 2007. A maximum of 50 Co-ed teams of three will race while biking, running, and canoeing. Each team will be required to navigate the course and reach several designated checkpoints.  Racers will be given maps and race booklets on race day that explain the rules and the details of the racecourse.  In addition, teams will be required to complete a series of challenges along the course that will test their team and individual skills.  This race is a sprint course and can be completed in 5 - 10 hours.  History of Crystal LakeThe Crystal Lake area's first European settlers, Beman and Polly Tuttle Crandall arrived in February 1836 with their six children, and discovered a sparkling clear lake, tall timber, and vast prairies. By August 1836, the U.S. government granted homestead rights to the Crandalls. An old trail, forged by the Sac and Fox tribes, extended from Fort Dearborn in Chicago to northwest Wisconsin, with the portion through Crystal Lake known as Route 14. A log cabin inn, the Lyman-King House, stood on Virginia Street near Pomeroy Avenue and served as a stage coach stop and trading post.The Village of Crystal Lake was platted in 1840 by Beman Crandall, Christopher Walkup, and Abner Beardsley.
