The 2012 Elgin House Walk was declared a success!  I loved it and they had a different area of town that I had never been to before with smaller bungalow type homes. This area is also surprisingly spattered with mail order homes from Sears.  The SWAN homeowners did a great walking tour and have identified 35 homes that have been documented officially in this area so far.Elgin has nearly 300 Sears homes in which kits were shipped to the buyer and contained almost everything necessary to assemble a complete home.  Most homes were purchased (assembled) during the 20's.  Some fortunate homeowners also have the original plans and specs that were offered in the Sears catalog.  Just like we do now, most people purchased by models.  This particular bungalow model pictured was called the Del Rey... 09/13/2012

It's a jungle out there for some homeowners and poor bungalows!I was at the Elgin House Walk last weekend and was passing through this neighborhood when I happened to notice a foreclosure by the conspicuous bright orange 'stay away' stickers. Why doesn't the bank just put a flashing red light on the front of the home but that's another post.  When checking out the remodeled interior from the front livingroom windows on tip-toe, I decided to go around the side of the house to see how the backyard was.Then I saw it!  The killer vines creeping up the side of the neighbors house going up the walls, through the eaves and breaking through the roof and gutters!  These vines were as thick as my wrist (delicate as I am, mind you!) and had been chopped at the roots and left dangling.
