Riverwoods has received the title of Tree City USA and the people of Riverwoods want to keep it that way. This past Wednesday evening I attended a meeting at the Riverwoods Village Hall (a log cabin in the woods) where the new Riverwoods reforestation program was presented.  The Village of Riverwoods will give matching funds for removal of invasive plants like buckthorn and garlic mustard as well as matching funds for young trees and seedlings to be planted when the invasives are removed. To arborists and plant experts spoke about the type of trees that are native to our area.  The Village Forester, Chuck Stewart also explained the program and will be on call one morning every other week to answer any tree related questions from Riverwoods residents and will also walk a resident's prope... 11/12/2010

Once again the entire Village of Riverwoods worked to create the biggest and best Halloween Party ever.  This year almost 1000 people turned out for the festivities.  The fact that it was the Saturday before Halloween and the weather was beautiful really helped.  As the Mayor's wife, I was in charge of the party and people actually called and asked if they could help.  This was the nineth year the Village Hall has been covered with spiders, ghosts and witches.  Our sponsors bear almost the entire cost of the party and provide free hot dogs, pizza, cider, candy and smores which are prepared around the bonfire.  The only expense to the Village is the horse drawn haywagon.  Bob Gand of The Village Music Store in  Deerfield rides the haywagon and sings and plays the banjo.  Jodygigglejam pl... 11/07/2010

I recently returned from Las Vegas, NV where I attended ProAct, 6 days of classes that will enable me to get my Certified Real Estate Specialist (CRS) designation.  The classes were from 8:30 A.M. to 5:00 P.M. each day.  It was a grueling but extremely rewarding learning opportunity.  The class I found the most beneficial was the class I was most worried about, "Financing and Tax Advantages For Agents and Their Clients", taught by Dale Carlton.  I told him the first day of the class that I had to take off my shoes to count to 20 and asked if I would fail.  By the end of the 2 days I was using a financial calculator and calculating mortgage rates, interest rates and unpaid balances on mortgages. As the wife of the Mayor of Riverwoods one of the most fun things I get to do each year is organize the annual halloween party.  This year Riverwoods held its eighth annual Halloween Party at the Riverwoods Village hall.  There was a horse drawn hay wagon, free Pizza, free hotdogs, hot cider, popcorn and candy which made it a truly fun event.  There was also a huge bon fire to gather around and make s'mores. It is truly a village event.  This year at least 10 people helped with the amazing decorations.  Since the Village hall is a log cabin it really lends itself to the Halloween theme.  In addition, there were another 15-20 people who helped serve all the food. On October 4th Riverwoods celebrated its 50th year as being founded as a Village.  It was a golden day for the golden anniversary of the Village.  There were hotdogs, brots & ribs and photoboards showing the Village 50 years ago.  The attendance wasn't quite what was expected, but the Bears were playing football at the same time and that is really tough competition. We had asked for new coverage of the event. My husband, Bill, is the Mayor.  Instead all we got was a photographer who took a picture of an adorable toddler and our dog Zoey.  Well hopefully that toddler will be there 50 years from now to celebrate the 100th year of the Village. On October 4th Riverwoods will be celebrating its 50th anniversary for the founding of the Village.  We are having a huge barbecue, a big band playing and hopefully tales of the history of the Village.  Stories of the days when Riverwoods was simply a community of summer cottages for the wealthy residents of Winnetka.  When there was an amusement park on the corner of Deerfield and Milwaukee Avenue, When a bunch of farmers got together at the Hermann Wildflower Farm on the corner of Deerfield and Portwine and named the streets after their favorite drink ie:  Portwine & Sherry.  In the old days there were small rattlesnakes all along the  Des Plaines River which are long gone today.  We still have our horses and hopefully some of them will be at the celebration.  We will try to show a vi... 09/23/2009
