Digging through old pictures to work on my post in response to Deb Brooks Diary of a REALTOR contest, jogged a lot of really great memories for me. Wouldn't it be fun if everyone posted an old photo of themselves taken in the town they are from and then posted in the localism spot for that town (instead of the town you are currently living in).  I posted this under the localism spot of Waukegan, Illinois...the town I grew up in. My own little trip down memory lane is pictured below.  Yep, that's me getting ready to walk in a parade during Waukegan, Illinois' Little Fort Days Centennial Celebration back in the early 60's.  I think I was about 3 or 4 and I almost remember this photo being taken.  I haven't changed a bit.

Waukegan is located in Lake County, Illinois. The city had a total population of 87,901 (2000 census). Waukegan is the ninth-largest city in Illinois by population. The city has plans for redevelopment of the lakefront. The lakefront and harbor plan calls for most industrial activity to be removed, except for the Midwest Generation power plant and North Shore wastewater treatment facilities. The existing industry would be replaced by residential and recreational space. The Johns-Manville site is no longer going to be converted into a recreational facility containing 16 soccer fields and five baseball diamonds. Over the past few months, I discovered a sleepy little city just north of Chicago.  It has beautiful beaches and gorgeous views of Lake Michigan.  Waukegan, a once bustling city, had fallen on to some hard socio-economic times.  In the past several years, the city council and the mayor of Waukegan have been pushing for economic, social, and developmental changes.  They retained one of the top architectural and development firms in the country Skidmore, Owings & Merrill to develop a Master Plan that would give the city a map to redevelopment & revitalization.  Today the data is starting to show Waukegan's commitment to change.Home of the great Jack Benny, Waukegan has the only World Class Theatre in Lake County, Illinois.  The Genesee Theatre plays host to some great acts including Wayne...

So I recently came across a new investment opportunity by the lake.  Waukegan, Illinois has been a depressed little city for the past 40 years.  However, the city has been planting some seeds over the past 5 years that are really beginning to bear some fruit.  If you go to http://www.waukeganvision.com/ you'll see that the city has invested and will continue to invest several million dollars into bringing the city back to life.  The city went out and hired the very best architecture & planning firm in the country in Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM) to help them put together a master plan for the next 20 years.   After reading through the master plan and doing some of my own investigation, I've put together some of my thoughts on why I see so much opportunity in Waukegan.HistoryWaukegan ...
