THE BATTLE OF TIPPECANOE: November 7, 1811 PROPHETS ROCK The Prophet (half-brother of Tecumseh who was away recruiting Indian nations for his Confederacy) directed the attack upon William Henry Harrison's forces that were encamped over 1/4 mile away from the rock pictured above. During the battle the Prophet sat and chanted songs to encourage his warriors in the battle and he prayed for success on the battlefield. Harrison had his men prepared for a night/pre-dawn attack and the Native American forces were turned back after a bloody engagement. This was viewed as the opening battle of the War of 1812 between Britain and the US. Prophet's Rock is a limestone formation on the side of a steep hill west of the Tippecanoe Battlefield site.
