There is just no way around it.  Many people live in Olathe and make it their home because of the quality of schools the Olathe School District offers.  Myself included. When my wife, family and I knew we were coming back to the Kansas City area we interviewed three school districts.  And while there was certainly nothing wrong with either of the other two, Olathe stood out head and shoulders for our needs.  We have four children, two with special needs and one with an Einstein brain.  We needed both ends of the spectrum and everything in between from our school system. We chose Olathe and then we had to find a house.  Now because of our we may have done the process a little more deliberately than most.  But I think you will find that many, many residents of Olathe are here not only beca...

As I sit here writing this my heart is still racing, my blood still pumping and memories are still being filed.  But I wanted to take a moment and share with you one of the great things the City of Olathe has to offer it's residents. It is as simple as the Indian Creek Greenway Trail that ends in Olathe.  Where it starts I haven't made it to, yet.  Today my fifteen year old son and I picked up the trail at approximately 140th & MurLen, right where MurLen goes over Indian Creek and the corresponding trail.  We've ridden it to the end heading SW.  That's down around 154th and Lindenwood at Southdowns Park.  Today, however, we headed NE.When we reached just north of 127th & Pflumm the trail leaves Olathe and heads into Overland Park's responsibility.  We chose to ride on all the way to 119t...

More plans for growing the southern boundaries of Olathe, KSThere have been proposals and offerings on a new interchange at 159th and I-35 for the past few years in Olathe, and it appears as though these changes are developing into reality.  Although, the plan may be a ways off, it is to the credit of our city council and planning committee that they are thinking ahead and planning appropriately. The Lone Elm Vicinity Plan now appears to have a corporate and retail slate placed on it versus a large lot residential neighborhood that was once on the table.  Olathe has a large retail development now at 119th Street and I-35 that has placed several major retail and shopping centers on both sides of the interstate.  Bass Pro Shop just moved on the west side and on the east is side there is an...

Last Friday my family and I wanted to do something fun for a Friday night. No, I didn't want CiCi's Pizza...again. And with kids the ages of 15, 12, 10 & 3 it's hard to find a movie we can all agree on. Then I had a great idea."Let's go to a Japanese steakhouse!"Only one of our 4 kids had ever been. Let's face it, Japanese steakhouses are not exactly cheap. But I had a very good month of sales and thought the family should share in the rewards. A quick look online for Japaneses steakhouses and we found Haru's at 119th & Strang Line here in Olathe, Kansas. Now, I've driven by the place 14,968 times in the last two years. I've never really noticed it because as soon as I see "sushi", I'm done. But we made a 7:00 reservation and off we went.Glad we did! We were greeted promptly at the door ...

Olathe-Through the Years is the last of the twelve six foot boot sculptures on display in Olathe, Kansas. This boot sculpture is one of my favorites, maybe because I may fit into this category, artists of Olathe 50+!  The designer, Linda Burgess, provides features and images of scenes and items representative of Olathe's settlement, development and progress from pioneer times through present day.  Three collage areas depict distinct ears of Olathe's development while the fourth collage represents agricultural heritage. The location of this boot sculpture is in front of the Olathe Medical Center, near the intersection of I-35 and 151st street, just on the south side of the Great Mall of the Great Plains.  There is a lot of detail in this boot, so look closely at the images presented. The sp...

Hyer's Famous Spread Eagle Boot is another "Welcome Home! Cowboy Boots" sculpture that illustrates the proud past of Olathe, Kansas and the celebration of Olathe's 150th Birthday.  At first I was skeptical of putting this one on my post, but I have to give all these sculptures their place in history.  I just wish the name used would have been more closely considered before it was printed. Anyway, this boot sculpture is sponsored and provided by the Hyer Family who created the first cowboy boot.  The design was the "Spread Eagle" that is displayed here, that was originally a dress boot of distinction with the in-lay hand sewn and re-laid design.  The foot of the boot was made of black kangaroo and the leg of the boot was dark blue kid.  The eagle design was made of white and red kid.  St...

Olathe, Kansas and the next of the twelve boot sculptures is called the "City of Governors".  These boot sculptures are celebrating Olathe's 150th Birthday. This boot sculpture was designed by Elaine Lierly Jones from Gardner, Kansas and it's display celebrates the five governors how lived in Olathe.  Thus the City of Governors!  Detail is provided of these men in realistic, nostalgic portraits.  At the lower section of the boot provides portraits of street scenes of the early days of Olathe.  In 1961, John Anderson, Jr, the Governor of Kansas, outfitted the other 49 governors with the famous Hyer boots made here in Olathe.  He is featured on the front of this boot sculpture. This sculpture is displayed on the corner of Kansas Avenue and Santa Fe on the west side of the Olathe City Hall. ...
