100 DAYS OF CENTRAL MASS FEATURES CAPE COD STYLE HOMES Cape Cod style homes first originated in the late 1700s and were built by English settlers that came to America.  A former President of Yale University, Reverend Timothy Dwight, is credited with coming up with the name "Cape Cod" for this class of home styles.  Cape Cods were modeled after the half-timbered homes in England, but were altered to adapt to the stormy New England weather.  They are traditionally 1 - 1 1/2 story homes with a steep roof and side gables.  Some capes have dormers that allow extra light, space and storage.  They are simple style homes, symmetrical with centered doors and shutters that could be used to protect the house during storms.  In the older style capes, the chimney is usually located in the center of...

100 DAYS OF CENTRAL MASS FEATURES COLONIAL STYLE HOMES The colonial architecture is associated with many different cultural traditions, including English, Spanish, Dutch and French.  Colonials found here in Central Mass are stately and symmetrical.  They are usually a 2 story rectangular dwelling with bedrooms on the second floor.  New England settlers first constructed what is known as Garrison Colonials, colonials that were similar to medieval England homes.  They had steep gable roofs, diamond paned windows and unpainted clapboard or wood siding.  Today's colonials are known as Neo-Colonials.  Inspired by the original colonial homes, Neo-Colonials mix modern style with classic simplicity and structure.  Most are sided with vinyl or brick veneer and have distinguishing features such ...

100 DAYS OF CENTRAL MASS FEATURES ANNIE'S COUNTRY KITCHEN We love this place so much that it made the list again!  Annie's Country Kitchen, across the street from our office, is one of our favorite hometown country restaurants.  Talk about A LOT of food for the money, this place has it all!  Country fried steak, banana cream pies, texas french toast & more!  Outdoors they have a nice area for children to play in the sand with toys and dump trucks.  Each day they feature a ton of specials and they are usually packed with customers.  The service is friendly and fast, you can't beat it in Sturbridge. I lived much of my life in North Carolina and James is from Texas so a good country kitchen is hard to come by in New England, but this one can definitely run with the best of them.  If you'r...

Golf in October at Hemlock Ridge Golf Course in Sturbridge, MA One of the most picturesque golf courses in Central Massachusetts is located in Sturbridge.   Hemlock Ridge Golf Course is set among the western hills of town, allowing for beautiful views amidst the greens. The usual golf season here runs from April 1 to November 30, and when I visited this morning, the course was busy with early risers.  Not surprising, given the golden sun of the day.  The course starts its tee times at 6 AM, and it appeared that several golfers were already finishing their nine holes. Hemlock Ridge was built in 1970.  Prior to the golf course, the land was farm land where the owners, the Palmer family, raised cattle.  As time passed, the Palmers started to convert their farm into a golf course. Hemlock R...

First Snow in Sturbridge, MA Today was a significant day in the history of Sturbridge:  The first snow of winter 2009-2010 arrived!  I was working hard in my office this afternoon and looked out the window to see tiny flecks of white drifting through the air.  Very tiny.  Almost rain drops, but alas it was just cold enough to be snow.  Nothing was sticking to the ground, no wicked nor'easter winds, no difficulty driving. But still the first snow of the season. Many people around town are a bit grumpy about this early arrival.  But I am just thrilled.  Sure, I had hoped for a couple more 70-degree days, but if Mother Nature decides to give us snow, then let it snow! Snow - it's still magical to me.

The RE/MAX Hot Air Balloon came to Sturbridge, MA, on September 20 as part of the first-ever Fiskdale Fest.  Our broker, Lorraine Herbert, and many agents from our offices were there to watch the unfolding of the balloon.  It was quite exciting, and I took tons of photos.  Here are the best ones. Did you know that the RE/MAX Hot Air Balloon Arrives in a Trailer? The balloon gets stretched out in the field. Hot air is blown into the balloon.    Almost there...     First Flight of the Day!   Special thanks to the folks at the Copper Stallion and the Sturbridge Country Inn for helping bring the RE/MAX balloon to Sturbridge.  The donations received for each tethered ride went directly to the Second Chance Animal Shelter.
