Catonsville, Maryland has many quirky events that are celebrated throughout the year. A tradition on Easter Sunday is a blaze of balloons from one end of the main High Street of Frederick Road to the I695 beltway exit. Someone from a local church gets up awfully early on Easter Sunday and ties balloons to trees, lamp posts, parking meters, benches and railings. Finally our children in Howard County and Baltimore County went back to school today. The first school day since February 5th (and that was a half day!!!)  "But it stopped snowing last Thursday" you may say! Well, yes this is true, but the extreme amounts of snow in Maryland have created a nightmare for the school system. The parking lots (for teachers to park in) have not been cleared. The sidewalks have not been cleared, so the "walkers" are in danger and there is no-where for the children to stand at the usual "bus stops" Mothers Day Out Westchesteris the pre-school that my son attends. The snow is piled high and there is limited parking. One of the reasons I love being a resident of Catonsville, Maryland is the observance of holidays. July 4th is legendary with one of the best "Independance Day" parades in the area and a firework display that is spectacular. On other holidays during the year that the flag is flown, like today, Presidents Day, the main street of Catonsville, Frederick Road, is ablaze with the "Stars and Stripes" on the parking meters. Today was no exception, but the delivery was probably more of a challenge than usual. Due to the almost 3 feet of snow in the past 10 days, the walls of dirty ice remain throughout the area. The sidewalks have not been cleared and to place and remove the flags would have entailed some tricky maneuvers. All the local news channels in the Baltimore area are eagerly awaiting to see if this major snow storm will top the record of 28.2 inches set in 2003. WBAL TV, WJZ and ABC2 News are sending out their news reporters to convey the conditions across the area. They pretty much are all saying the same thing. "It's deep and wet, the roads are impassable and it's not going to stop for a while" Catonsville, just 10 miles from the center of Baltimore City is eerily quiet. Frederick Road, which is the main road through the area has hardly any traffic at all. The snow plough's have gone through and actually blocked most of the small roads. Now that does not sound very polite! On Saturday I was showing clients some great Catonsville (Maryland) homes that were at least 50 years old. Wonderful details were in abundance in all of the homes. Huge great Victorians with 3 levels and full wrap around porches. My favorite style to view. Just delightful. In one of the homes I walked into a room and I was overwhelmed with nostalgia and childhood memories. The natural aroma, the huge fireplace and the period furniture evoked thoughts of my wonderful Grandmother and the times we would spend at her house as a child. Smells are very thought provoking and it was very enjoyable to have such pleasant recollections. The house was charming, but some features did not suit my clients.   Saturday March 7th 2009 Spring is almost here and this evening before you go to bed, be sure to turn all of your clocks forward one hour to accommodate Daylight Savings. SPRING FORWARD.
