In Washington, DC, where I live and work, the residents think we have a sort of a monopoly on local history, and we do have a lot.  But about 30 miles east of Washington, and just west of Baltimore, Ellicott City is a fascinating trip back in time – over 200 years!  And it's one I make several times a year. When you enter Ellicott City, Maryland, two things look totally out of place – power lines and automobiles! Its first residents were the three Ellicott brothers, John, Andrew and Joseph, Quakers who moved down from Pennsylvania in 1772 to try their hand at farming wheat.  And the settlement prospered and soon became the end of the line for the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad.  The old station is now a museum.Today, many of the buildings date back to the 1800’s, and are still standing de...

Time to come inside for winter! Outside the house, tend to these autumn chores:Clean and store patio furniture, umbrellas, children's summer toys. Touch up paint on trim, railings and decks. Use a wire brush to remove flaking paint; prime bare wood first. Check caulk around windows and doors. Follow manufacturer's recommendations to re-caulk if needed. Inspect external doors and garage doors. Do they close tightly? Install weather-stripping, door thresholds if needed. Wash exterior windows. Drain and store garden hoses. Install insulating covers on exterior spigots. In hard-freeze areas, have sprinkler systems blown free of water. Check gutters and downspouts. Clear of debris if necessary. In cold-weather areas, consider installing heating cable to prevent ice dams. Have chimneys and fl...

Selling Your Home: Where to Begin?  First Impressions  Remember what first attracted you to your house when you bought it? What excited you about it most? When deciding how best to present your home for sale, it is helpful to try to get back into that buyer's frame of mind. A spruced-up house makes a great first impression on potential buyers. An attractive property grabs their attention and makes them excited about finding a house that looks and feels well cared for. Because buyers believe they'll encounter fewer problems if they buy it, your house becomes more appealing and stands out from the competition. So if you prepare your home correctly, you'll save time selling it when it's on the market. A good first impression makes an impact on a number of levels. It's not just the way your...

Baltimore and its five suburban counties could be facing a shortage of 20,000 homes in four years, a Sun analysis of official job and household forecasts showed. By 2030, the shortfall would reach 100,000 homes. A mismatch of that magnitude could trigger a recession, experts say, or an equally troublesome future where tens of thousands of workers are forced into punishing, hours-long commutes.
