The 2022 population estimate is 71,499, compared to 59,933 from the 2010 census. Gaithersburg has also grown in diversity in the past decade, with 31% identifying as white, 28% identifying as Hispanic/Latino, 19% identifying as Asian, and 16% identifying as Black. First Hydrogen Electric Bus Project on the East Coast The Montgomery County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) has won a competitive grant award of nearly $15 million from the United States Department of Transportation’s Federal Transit Administration (FTA) for the purchase of 13 new hydrogen fuel cell buses and the construction of a green hydrogen fueling site at the David F. Bone Equipment Maintenance Transit Operations Center in Gaithersburg. Specialized SmartTrip Cards Free for Seniors (Age 65 and Older) After 28 months of temporarily suspending fare collection due to the COVID-19 health crisis, the Montgomery County Department of Transportation's (MCDOTs) Ride On bus system will resume fare collection on Monday, Aug. 1 on all services, including Ride On, Ride On extRa, Flex, and Flash. Fares will continue to be free throughout July.
