Masks Mandated for All Maryland Schools All Maryland students, staff and school visitors will be required to wear masks when they go to school this year, the state Board of Education decided Thursday afternoon. The vote came as the number of COVID-19 cases surges in the state and nationwide. The order will last 180 days, and the board can rescind it during that time if it chooses. Some members said masks are necessary to preserve in-person learning, in an effort to keep kids from getting sick and having to quarantine. Parents Encouraged to Organize 'Walking School Buses' With the return to in-person instruction this fall, the Montgomery County Department of Transportation’s (MCDOT) Safe Routes to Schools program is encouraging parents to organize a “Walking School Bus” to enable young students to safely walk to schools in their neighborhoods. Walking school buses provide a safe and fun way for children to get physical activity as they travel to and from school with adult supervision.A walking school bus is a parent-organized effort similar to a carpool group but rather than share driving responsibilities, adults supervise a group of kids walking to and from school. Each “bus” walks along a set route, with one or more adults leading the group of children. The walking group picks up, or drops off, chil...

Books by Pat Conroy (1945-2016) Earlier today I was reading the blog post by Ron and Alexandra Seigel in which they recommended the books by Pat Conroy. Two particular novels of Pat Conroy that have become considered contemporary classics are “The Prince of Tides” and “The Great Santini”. The Prince of Tides went on to become made into a film that had garnered multiple Oscar nominations, starring Barbara Streisand and Nick Nolte. Chef Dolores has and recommends "The Cookbook by Pat Conroy".  PAT CONROY BOOKS IN ORDERPublication Order of Standalone NovelsThe Boo (1970)           The Great Santini (1976)        The Lords of Discipline (1980) The Prince of Tides (1986)      Beach Music (1995)    South of Broad (2009) Publication Order of Non-Fiction BooksThe Water is Wide (1972)       My L...

Kentlands Summerfest and Birthday Celebration The Kentlands Summerfest for community families and their guests happened to be scheduled on my birthday this year. This event included dinner, drinks, entertainment and lawn games around the Kentlands Club House.  We were a bit worried about being with a large crowd since the COVID cases are increasing in the area. However, the event was very well planned. We had our own table under the open sided tent for the seating and food service area and there was plenty of room of social distancing.  Large fans provided good air circulation and a nice breeze for the warm evening. Smokehouse Grill handled the food service and everything was excellent. 7 Locks Brewing served the beer for the event and we enjoyed sampling the Devil's Alley IPA, Snakeden...
