Montgomery County Bike Drive Collects Nearly 300 BicyclesThe Montgomery County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) is connecting people in the County who have a bike to donate with people who need one. On Friday, Oct. 20, MCDOT collected 290 bicycles at its annual one-day bike collection event in Rockville.MCDOT sponsored the collection of child and adult bikes in partnership with Rockville Bike Hub and Bikes for the World. Volunteers from the organizations will refurbish the bikes and place them with children and adults in need through Bikes for the World, the MCDOT Bike Match Program and the Rockville Terrific Kids program.This was the fifth year that MCDOT sponsored a bike drive (no events were held during two years of the COVID-19 health crisis). Security Grants to Jewish, Muslim, Sikh, and Zoroastrian CommunitiesMontgomery County Executive Marc Elrich and the County Council have expedited $311,700 in Nonprofit Security Grant funding to Jewish, Muslim, Sikh, and Zoroastrian communities in Montgomery County to enhance security measures. Since the outbreak of violence in Israel and Gaza, concern has risen that these communities have been, or will be, threatened by violence and other crimes motivated by hate and bias. Maryland Smoke Alarm LawMontgomery County was the first major jurisdiction in the U.S. to adopt a “retrofit” Smoke Alarm Law, which required smoke alarms to be installed in all homes? Altar de Día de los Muertos  The City’s Multicultural Affairs Committee and De Colores Mexican Folk Dance Company present “Altar de Día de los Muertos” at the Activity Center at Bohrer Park. View the exhibit October 29 through November 5 from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. on weekdays and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekends. Grant Funding Available for Small, Emerging, Volunteer-Led Nonprofit Montgomery County’s Office of Grants Management is accepting applications from qualified nonprofit organizations providing direct services to or advocacy for County community members. An amount totaling $250,000 is available through the County’s Fiscal Year 2024 (FY24) Quarter 2 Community Projects Fund Grants Program. Applications can be submitted by eligible nonprofits until 11:59 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 31.Nonprofit organizations with fewer than three employees and annual budgets of $250,000 or less are eligible to receive a grant. Operation Green Light, Veterans Day, Sat., Nov. 11As Veterans Day approaches on Saturday, Nov. 11, Montgomery County has joined the national “Operation Green Light” salute to veterans and the County’s Commission on Veterans Affairs is seeking additions to its virtual tribute to County veterans.
