Where are the first time home buyers?   Some of us have enjoyed years of working with first time home buyers. It is a joy to advise young people as they become home owners for the first time. Household formations and home ownership lead to future generations of home buyers. Many of the first time buyers that we have been counting on for home sales are not in the market. They moved back home and are living with their parents until they find jobs and can save enough to become home owners. Economic survival and keeping up with student loan debt has replaced the usual path to home ownership. Reports have indicated that a large percentage of 18-34 year olds are unemployed. They need jobs to get out of their parents’ homes and it will take some time to save enough for a down payment while str...

Summer watch for West Nile virus in Maryland   The first area case of the season of West Nile virus has been reported in Prince William County in northern Virginia.  West Nile virus is a disease spread by infected mosquitoes to animals and humans.  The Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene tracks the cases of West Nile Virus that usually begin their appearance in late July and early August. Maryland residents are urged to use bug repellent when they are outdoors during the summer months.  It also helps to wear long sleeve shirts and pants whenever possible when out  during prime mosquito biting time. Mosquitoes tend to bite during evenings and mornings. It is important to use screens on doors and windows that are open. Residents should get rid of any standing water, including...

Visiting Nora Roberts’ Inn BoonsBoro   If you enjoy romance novels written by Nora Roberts, you should know that she is based in Boonsboro, Maryland. In fact, part of Boonsboro is now a family business for Nora Roberts. Boonsboro is a rural town at the foot of South Mountain and was founded in 1792 by George and William Boone, cousins of Daniel Boone. Dolores and her friends in the Red Hat Society visited Boonsboro today. They had lunch at Dan’s Restaurant & TapHouse and then had an opportunity to tour the Inn BoonsBoro which is owned by Nora Roberts. The eight rooms in the inn are inspired by literary romantic couples. Dolores says the rooms at the Inn are beautiful. The ladies, of course, wanted to take full advantage of the gift shop, Gifts Inn BoonsBoro and the Turn the Page Booksto...

Maryland shoreline threatened by rising sea levels   All of us know that global warming is causing glaciers to melt and oceans to expand but it gives a different perspective when we consider the impact on our home state. Maryland has over 3,100 miles of tidal shoreline along the Atlantic Ocean and the Chesapeake Bay and Maryland is one of the areas most vulnerable to the rising sea levels.   The Maryland Commission on Climate Change reports that coastal sea levels may rise from two to six feet by the end of the century. State and local planners that must project long term land uses are now considering the impact of rising sea levels. Nobody wants to locate schools and public buildings that are expected to last 75 years or more in places projected to flood. Coastal residents may find tha...

Children being injured by falling TVs   Most of us have not had the experience of a TV falling from a counter or chest but over 200,000 U.S. children have gone to emergency rooms with injuries suffered from falling TVs. Most of the injuries are to children under 5 years old. Head and neck injuries are the most common. These statistics are from an article by Lindsey Tanner in The Washington Post. The Consumer Product Safety Commission wants parents and grandparents to be alert for the risks and take steps to avoid falling TVs. One of the reasons that injuries have increased is that older heavy TV sets are moved to bedrooms or other areas and are placed on furniture that fails to provide adequate support. The Commission urges parents to securely anchor television sets to prevent fall Coul...

Home Sale Statistics, Washington, DC Metro Area, June, 2013 Families that are relocated to the Washington, DC Metro Area have a selection of a number of jurisdictions in which to purchase a home. The primary factors for many are convenience to work, price range and school systems. Simply stated, those that will be working in Virginia will usually want to live in Virginia and those that live in Maryland usually want to live in Maryland. The selection is more difficult when the job location is in the District of Columbia. Generally speaking, home prices in the suburbs are lower as you go out from the District of Columbia.  The Median Sales Price chart shown below provides price ranges for the various jurisdictions.  The statistics are from MRIS, the regional multiple listing service, and ...
