Skating on the Lakes is Prohibited!    Please warn your family members that it is not safe to walk on the ice covered lakes in Kentlands and Lakelands.  Do not try to rescue pets that have fallen through the ice. Call for assistance! This following notice was distributed by the Kentlands Citizens Assembly. The frozen lakes look inviting, but please do not attempt to play or skate on any lakes within Kentlands or Lakelands.  The ice could give way and you would fall through to freezing water!  If this were to happen, it could prove to be fatal before rescuers could reach the scene.  Talk to your children about the extreme danger of playing on the ice or on the rocks surrounding the lakes. Yes, the ice looks stable and inviting but please remember that our lake systems double as a storm d...

Book Recommendation: Terminal City by Linda Fairstein   The latest novel by Linda Fairstein is Terminal City (2014). This is book number 16 in her Alexandra Cooper series. Her thrillers are excellent selections for your reading list. The primary character is Alex Cooper, Assistant DA. Linda Fairstein is an American author and former prosecutor focusing on crimes of violence against women and children.   “With her newest Alexandra Cooper novel, Terminal City, New York Times bestselling author Linda Fairstein delivers another breakneck thriller that captures the essence of New York City—its glamour, its possibilities, and its endless capacity for darkness.”  - Goodreads   Orchids, Longwood Gardens IMG 1784 Photograph by Roy Kelley Roy and Dolores Kelley Photographs

GoRed For Women's Healthon the First Friday in February   Tomorrow is a day designed to raise awareness of the dangers of heart disease and the risks of stroke in women, and it all starts by your wearing red. Wear Red Day is a project of the American Heart Association, and the message behind it all could not be more simple. Four out of five cases of heart disease and stroke are—or could have been—completely preventable through lifestyle changes. We celebrate women wearing red with a portrait of a woman wearing red that was painted by a woman who was ahead of her time. Harriet Cany studied under and later married painter Rembrandt Peale. A savvy widow who had worked in her family business after the death of her husband, her second marriage came with a pre-nup. It protected her money from...

Book Recommendation: Rain on the Dead by Jack Higgins   One of the novels that I recently read is Rain on the Dead (2014) by Jack Higgins. This is the 21st book in the Sean Dillon series. If you enjoy suspense novels, you should add this book to your reading list. Jack Higgins is the principal pseudonym of British novelist Harry Patterson. He is one of the best-selling authors of popular thrillers and espionage novels.   “The past comes back to haunt Sean Dillon and his colleagues, as the" New York Times"-bestselling master of suspense returns with a knife-edge story of terrorism, revenge, and a very old nemesis.  In the past few years, the killing and capture of many Al-Qaeda leaders has left the terrorist organization wounded--but by no means dead. And they intend to prove it.  On a d...

Driving in Fog Safety Tips   Fog can be thought of as a cloud at ground level. It forms when the temperature drops to the dew point (the temperature at which air is saturated), and invisible water vapor in the air condenses to form suspended water droplets. Fog can reduce visibility to 1/4 mile or less, creating hazardous driving conditions. If you can't postpone your trip until dense fog lifts -- usually by late morning or the afternoon -- follow these tips:   * Drive with lights on low beam. High beams will only be reflected back off the fog and actually impair visibility even more.   * Reduce your speed -- and watch your speedometer. Fog creates a visual illusion of slow motion when you may actually be speeding.   * Listen for traffic you cannot see. Open your window a little, to hea...

Book Recommendation: The Murder Room by P.D. James   You may have seen the news reports of the death of English crime writer P.D. James in November, 2014. She was an excellent author and I have decided to read all of her novels that I failed to read during her lifetime. I just completed The Murder Room (2003). I recommend her novels for your reading list.   The P.D. James Library   Murders present meet murders past in P.D. James's latest harrowing, thought-provoking thriller. Commander Adam Dalgliesh is already acquainted with the Dupayne--a museum dedicated to the interwar years, with a room celebrating the most notorious murders of that time--when he is called to investigate the killing of one of the family trustees. He soon discovers that the victim was seeking to close the museum ag...

Home Safety Check for Seniors   The fire department recently launched a “Home Safety Check” program for seniors in Montgomery County, Maryland. Initial results from the program indicate that over 90% of smoke alarms checked during recent home visits to seniors were found to be inoperable due to dead or missing batteries, past the 10-year life span for smoke alarms or not present in homes. To request a free home safety evaluation and smoke alarm check-up, the Fire Department’s “Senior Hotline” is 240-777-2430. Additionally, all County residents are urged to take advantage of the department’s free home safety evaluation program and can call 311 for additional information.   Bird of Paradise, Longwood Gardens Conservatory 1748 Photograph by Roy Kelley Roy and Dolores Kelley Photographs
