Washington, DC Metro Area Housing Market, End of Year Metrics   The Washington DC Metro Area housing market ended on a positive note in 2014, with nearly every indicator performing better than in December 2013.  Closed sales increased 8.0 percent from 2013, the first year-over-year increase in 2014.  Only two jurisdictions had fewer closed sales than last December: Washington, D.C. (-2.2 percent) and Alexandria City (-0.6 percent).  The total number of closed sales for the year was 6.0 percent below the total number sold in 2013.  However, the total number of closed sales in 2014 was above the annual totals of every year from 2007 to 2012.  In December, the number of new pending contracts increased 10.8 percent from December 2013, marking the second consecutive month of year-over-year g...

Newcomers Coffee in Kentlands   There will be a Newcomers Coffee on Saturday, January 17, 2015 from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at the Kentlands Clubhouse for all new residents. Villa Cerrina Montepulciano D'Abruzzo   Villa Cerrina Montepulciano D'Abruzzo may be a long name for a very affordable red wine. This ruby-red wine is made with Montepulciano grapes grown in Abruzzo, central Italy. It is smooth and well balanced with deep red fruit aromas and flavors. African American History Month Essay Contest   In celebration of African American History Month, the City of Gaithersburg Multicultural Affairs Committee is hosting an essay contest for students in grades 3 - 5, with the theme, "What Lessons Can We Learn from the Life of Nelson Mandela?"    The deadline for submission is Friday, January 16. Winners will read their essays and receive awards at a reception on Wednesday, February 18 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the Activity Center at Bohrer Park. The event is free and open to the public. Good Neighbors Clear Their Sidewalks of Ice & Snow Be a good neighbor!   Montgomery County,  Maryland residents are required by law to clear sidewalks in front of and alongside their properties within 24 hours of the end of a storm. Precautions To Prevent Water Pipes From Freezing   This notice was distributed by the Montgomery County, Maryland Fire & Rescue Service: With forecasted record lows hitting our area over the next several days, we expect the potential of many water pipes freezing and bursting. Please review the below tips to help minimize the possibility or damage. Holiday Tree Recycling City of Gaithersburg, Maryland   Holiday trees are considered normal yard waste and will be collected from single family homes and townhouses by the City's recycling contractor when placed curbside by 7 a.m. on your weekly recycling day. There is no deadline for the collection of holiday trees. The City's recycling contractor will collect them, along with branches and other yard trimmings, during the weekly recycling pick-up throughout the year. Please remove all decorations including tinsel, make sure there is no metal attached to the tree, and do not wrap the tree in plastic. Trees with root balls will not be collected. Learn more here. Bulk Trash Pick Up in Kentlands, Thursday, Jan. 8th   Bulk trash items are collected by the City of Gaithersburg crews on your first recycling day of the month. The first Thursday of each month is the normal bulk trash pick up date for homes in Kentlands. When your bulk trash pick up day falls on a holiday when City offices are closed, bulk items will be picked up on the same day the following week.
