Police Warn of Surge in Phone Scams   Montgomery County, Maryland detectives say be wary of someone calling to say a friend or relative is hurt or jailed and needs money sent. An ongoing scam – a phone call claiming a relative or friend has been jailed or injured and needs money – has resurfaced in the past week, say Montgomery County Police. Police Warn of Surge in Phone Scams Here’s what police say to do if you receive a telephone call you believe is a scam: Do not provide information over the phone. Scammers often ask leading questions to retrieve information from you. Often, you do not realize that you are giving them valuable information. Scammers create a sense of urgency. Forbidden White Ale    Richmond’s Hardywood Park Craft Brewery and the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts partnered to brew a special beer in honor of the current exhibition, Forbidden City: Imperial Treasures from the Palace Museum, Beijing, on view through January 11, 2015.  The Belgian white ale named Forbidden is infused with Asian dragon fruit, a first for the brewery. “We wanted to focus on creating a beer that would bring elements from the realm of the Forbidden City,” Hardywood Head Brewer Brian Nelson said. “Although peculiar looking, dragon fruit lends a pleasant sweet flavor and subtle aroma. In a Belgian white ale, dragon fruit complements the wheat overtones in the ale and changes the color to a bright pink.

A Heart to Heart Message   I was reading a recent blog by Patricia Feager, Let's Talk Heart to Heart, and one of the comments that got my attention was made by Debbie Reynolds. Take a moment to read her message because the warning could save your life.  All of us need to pay close attention to our personal health and many of us need to pay especially close attention to the condition of our heart. If one of your goals for the new year is to get more exercise, you may want to also schedule an appointment for your physical examination. “I remember walking on my treadmill and feeling some discomfort and wondering what it was. I eased up on my walking and decided it was exercising too soon to eating a meal. Then it continued other times whenever I walked on the treadmill no matter if I had e...

Book Recommendation: The Lighthouse by P.D. James   You probably read recent reports about the November death of the well known English author P. D. James. I just finished reading The Lighthouse (2005) and recommend this and her other books for your reading list.   About the Book A secure and secluded retreat for the rich and powerful becomes the setting for an unsettling series of murders. Combe Island off the Cornish coast is a restful haven for the elite. But when one of its distinguished visitors is found hanging from the island’s famous lighthouse in what appears to have been a murder, the peace is shattered. Commander Adam Dalgliesh is called in to handle the sensitive case, but ...

Saturday Blogging Beverage: The Poet Oatmeal Stout   The Poet Oatmeal Stout brewed by New Holland Brewing Co., LLC in Holland, Michigan is one of my favorite beverages to enjoy while blogging in the late afternoon. This is a dark beer with a rich roasty malt character. Give it a taste test and you will add it to your shopping list for your next party.  This blog has no commercial purpose. My series on Blogging Beverages is solely for personal enjoyment. New Holland, of course, will be happy if you try and enjoy many of their labels.

Green Wall   This is the Green Wall at Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania. This is the passageway to some of the nicest individual restrooms that you will find in a public facility. The Green Wall has been featured in the national competition for restrooms.  Regular travelers know that a trip can be made much more pleasant when the restroom facilities are beyond expectations. This is also a wonderful demonstration of vertical gardening.   Green Wall, Longwood Gardens IMG 1604 Photograph by Roy Kelley Roy and Dolores Kelley Photographs

Be careful with the disposal of fireplace ashes   The Montgomery County Fire Department received a call saying a house was on fire. When they arrived, a wood fence was on fire and the fire had not yet reached the house. The cause was improperly handled fireplace ashes. This could have become a major fire during the holidays. VERMICELLI AL CAVIALE  (Vermicelli with Caviar)    When I mentioned what we were having for our New Year’s Eve dinner, some asked for the recipe. Chef Dolores provided this recipe.     1 pound vermicelli  ( a very thin spaghetti) 1/4 pound of butter, soft 4 ounces caviar Juice of 1/2 lemon Cook vermicelli al dente.  Have a large hot bowl at hand with the soft butter in it.  Lift the pasta directly from its boiling pot into the bowl, draining it over its pot before forking it into the bowl.  It must be hot, and it must be al dente.  Have 4 or 6 hot soup bowls ready.  Now mix the caviar into the pasta in its bowl, tossing well with wooden forks. Add the lemon juice and toss again.  Serve immediately in the hot soup bowls.  Serves 4  to 6. (I have successfully halved this recipe to serve 2...

Wildlife Tree, A Longwood Christmas    The 1,000+ acres of gardens and the very large Conservatory are decorated for the holidays for A Longwood Christmas at Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania.   A large tree in front of the Peirce du Pont House was decorated as a Wildlife Tree. What is a Wildlife Tree?  Decorate a tree of your own with hand made edible ornaments that will be enjoyed by your feathered and furry friends and you will have a Wildlife Tree.  It is fun to see the birds and animals as they eat the ornaments and it will provide opportunities for some photographs that you will want to share.   Happy Holidays!  Happy New Year!
