Snow Emergency Information for Kentlands Residents   Winter has officially arrived and adverse weather warnings are in the news. All of us need to be prepared for winter storms and snow removal. The following notice has been circulated by the Kentlands Citizens Assembly. When we do have snow to be removed, please make a personal effort to pay it forward by helping you neighbors clear their sidewalks and steps. There are many seniors who should not be shoveling snow and they will appreciate your assistance and support. Please take note of your street to determine if it's a designated Emergency Snow Route, and be reminded that there is no parking on such routes during a snow emergency.  According to the City of Gaithersburg, "It is generally safe to assume that if roads are snow covered, ...

"Madonna Sistina" by Raffaello Sanzio   One of my holiday blogs was about every Christmas ornament having a story. Sometimes, additional stories are provided by others. I posted a photograph of this ornament on my Facebook timeline and a Facebook friend in Italy responded with the image of the painting on which the ornament was based. So, there may be an art history lesson to be learned as you view the picture of this ornament. The painting is "Madonna Sistina" by Raffaello Sanzio.    Christmas Ornament IMG 1900 Photograph by RoyKelley Roy and Dolores Kelley Photographs "Madonna Sistina" by Raffaello Sanzio.

Saturday Flowers, Chrysanthemum Festival   We have a cold Saturday afternoon in Maryland and I am editing a few photographs from recent trips. This photograph was taken at the annual Chrysanthemum Festival at Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania. This is one of our favorite place to visit. Book Recommendation: Typhoon by Charles Cumming   Typhoon (2008), a spy fiction thriller by British author Charles Cumming, is the book I took to read during a recent week in Colonial Williamsburg. As things turned out, we were too busy and I did not finish the novel until we returned home. I am confident that you will enjoy the books by this author. Click on the book title link above for much more information on this novel. Books by Charles Cumming      “Charles Cumming, lauded internationally as the successor to John le Carre, returns with his biggest, most ambitious thriller to date. Beginning in 1997, just as the British are about to re - turn Hong Kong to Chinese rule, Joe Lennox, a young operative for SIS (MI6), loses both his girlfriend and his first high profile asset--a promine...

Christmas Tree Safety Tips   These safety tips were provided by Montgomery County Fire and Rescue in Montgomery County, Maryland. Remind all of your family members that a Christmas tree fire can destroy a room in less than a minute. Everybody needs to know exactly what to do in the event of a fire. When selecting a tree for the Holiday, needles on fresh trees should be green and hard to pull back from the branches, and the needle should not break if the tree has been freshly cut. The trunk should be sticky to the touch. Old trees can be identified by bouncing the tree trunk on the ground. If many needles fall off, the tree has been cut too long, has probably dried out, and is a fire hazard. A safer option is to buy a fire-resistant artificial tree. Use a wide-based stand to make sure th...

Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to drop mortgage down payments to 3%   Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac have announced that the down payments for conventional mortgage financing will be reduced from the current level of 5% to a new lower level at 3%. The intention of this change is to make it easier for younger home buyers to enter the housing market. For many years, the 3% down payment available for FHA insured financing has attracted a high percentage of first time home buyers. For Fannie Mae things go into effect December 13, 2014, but for Freddie Mac it won’t be until March 23rd of next year. The former has operated a similar program already so will be able to implement this more quickly, but it will only be available to first-time home buyers.   Rose, Longwood Gardens IMG 0193 Photograph by R...

National Bake Cookies Day I am certainly willing to celebrate National Bake Cookies Day. The following post is from the Chrysler Museum of Art in Norfolk, Virginia. Dolores and I recently visited the museum and this is my way of recommending the Chrysler Museum of Art as one of your personal travel destinations.   It's National Bake Cookies Day We're not sure how Dec. 18 got this tasty designation, but we can say that cookies date as far back as 7th-century Persia. In American history, the cookie is traced back to Dutch settlers and their "koekje," which means "little cake." We celebrate the day with The Baker at his Oven by Maurice Esteve, a French painter who ran around with the earliest Cubists and Fauvists and still lived to see the year 2001. He started his training in Paris before...

Holiday Wreaths, Colonial Williamsburg   Colonial Williamsburg is a great place to see holiday decorations that are made from natural materials. The decorations include hundreds of wreaths in the historic area. The designers are very creative. When you use natural materials, you may need to make repairs when colors fade or the birds and animals use the materials for snacks.

Home Sales Prices by Jurisdiction, Washington, DC Metro Area, November, 2014   One of the initial decisions that must be made by families being relocated to the Metro Area of Washington, DC is where to live. There are multiple jurisdictions and each of them offers benefits that should be considered. The major factors for most families are the commuting time and distance to workplaces and the quality of the schools. A quick glance at this chart will show that the home prices are generally higher in the areas closest to the District of Columbia. We recommend the use of an exclusive buyer agent who is really familiar with the local market.  Those who plan to use mortgage financing should have a pre-approval letter in hand. Your agent will be happy to suggest names of excellent mortgage loa...

It was a cold Sunday afternoon in December. My friends and I had brunch in Silver Spring Maryland and once well fortified and caffeinated set out on an enchanted real estate adventure in Washington Grove Maryland.  You can see winter sky in my photos. Imagine the smell of a wood burning fire in the air and the crunch of leaves underfoot as you set the scene in your mind.      These friends of mine are storybook-house enthusiasts, they love well-aged properties that have that "once upon a time" flair. We arrived in the town which is just outside Gaithersburg, parked our cars, and set out on foot. Most of the roads are too narrow for traffic. This is Washington Grove Maryland 20880, a town on the National Register of Historic Places.      Many of the houses in Washington Grove were ...

Photographing Hosta    Hosta is one of those plants that requires a very close look to enjoy the small flowers and to compare them from plant to plant. I like the early morning light or shade for photographing flowers in order to eliminate shadows created by direct sunlight.     Hosta, Kentlands, Gaithersburg, Maryland Photograph by Roy Kelley Roy and Dolores Kelley Photographs
