Two things to aim at in life   Real estate professional Kristin Johnson shared this quote in her Monday morning blog. “There are two things to aim at in life; first to get what you want, and after that to enjoy it. Only the wisest of mankind has achieved the second.” - Logan Pearsall Smith As we review our goals and accomplishments for the first half of this year, it is a good time to consider this quote. We now have what we want because that was part of the plan. However, many of us are not really enjoying it. Let’s resolve to join the wisest of mankind by achieving the second aim of life. Enjoy the summer and treasure every moment spent with those that you love. Goals and Goal Setting Quotations   Have you read these blogs?  I will appreciate your comments. Faux IRS Employee Scam   Fairfax County Police are warning residents about a resurgence of a fake IRS employee scam. Police have received dozens of complaints in recent weeks.  Callers are claiming residents have "overdue tax balances" and that they will be arrested and/or deported immediately if fines are not paid. The scam is sophisticated, and often involves false names, numbers and fake IRS badge numbers. Suspects often continue to call and harass the recipient.  Once money has been wired/sent, it is impossible to recover. What to Look For: •Callers typically demand between $4,000 and 6,000 in "immediate payment of unpaid tax bills." •Some suspects are described as having heavy accents. •The callers use scare tactics. They are demanding, aggressive, threatening and easily angered wh...

Fraudulent Debit Card Telephone Call Scam   An area police department has received several tips about a scam involving fake debit card telephone calls. Victims are receiving automated telephone messages saying that their debit cards have been temporarily disabled and need to be re-activated. The message then instructs listeners to enter their debit card number, PIN and expiration date. What to Look for: •Any phone message that asks you to enter your debit card number OR PIN number. Banks do not solicit debit card information through automated messages. •Any message or phone call requesting personal/financial information be entered electronically. If you suspect you've fallen victim to these messages, contact your bank and request your debit card be canceled and replaced as soon as possi...

Add gazanias for more color in your planter   Gazanias are small flowers with bold colors. We have them in the planter at the front of our home. They close up at night and then open again when the sun is shining. As you can see from the color of this gazania in the bright sun, they will be noticed. And, they are fun to photograph. We have pink, yellow and orange gazanias. Orange is my favorite color for these flowers. They are classified as low maintenance annuals.     Gazania, Kentlands, Gaithersburg, Maryland USA IMG 7899 Photograph by Roy Kelley Roy and Dolores Kelley Photographs

Daylily in our Kentlands home garden   This is a photograph of a daylily in our Kentlands home garden in Gaithersburg, Maryland. We have several different colors of daylilies but one day this past week the number of blooms was dramatically reduced. Evidently, one or more deer enjoyed daylilies for an early morning breakfast. Enjoy the colors of the season with your camera in hand.     Daylily, Kentlands, Gaithersburg, MD IMG 7903 Photograph by Roy Kelley Roy and Dolores Kelley Photographs

Attention Getting Words: Squamous cell carcinoma   This week, I have a four month follow up appointment with the plastic surgeon, Dr. Michael Vincent, who removed a squamous cell carcinoma from my upper lip. I am mentioning this in a blog because summertime activities that are outdoors increase the risk of skin cancer and I want you to take good care of yourself and your family members. I visit my dermatologist on a regular basis at a minimum of every four months for regular check ups. At the list visit, he took a close look at a small place on my upper lip and did a biopsy that resulted in the discovery of skin cancer and the referral to a plastic surgeon. Be very aware of damage that can be caused by sun or tanning bed exposure. Use sun block and lip protection every day. There is no ...

The photographs were taken at Romano's Macaroni Grill in Gaithersburg where we enjoyed dinner and our first evening together. We have invited them to visit again and to join us for a visit to Longwood Gardens. Black Dahlias   This blog is in response to a question by ActiveRain blogger Endre Barath, Jr. Endre asked me if I have read the book The Black Dahlia by James Ellroy. Then, Endre asked if there is really such a flower as a black dahlia.    “James Ellroy’s The Black Dahlia is a fictionalized account of the real life murder of Elizabeth Short. Short’s body was found in an abandoned field near the famous Hollywood sign on January 15, 1947. Despite a long and public investigation, the murder remains unsolved to this day. It is one of the most famous unsolved cases in American history.” - Wikipedia ” Legend has it that the journalists covering her murder dubbed her the Black Dahlia because of her black hair, black clothing and the constant wearing of a single dahlia flower in her hair." – G...

Bald Eagle at the National Zoo   In the urban area where we live, we do not usually see bald eagles. So, it is a special treat to be able to photograph a bald eagle during a visit to the National Zoo in Washington, DC. If a trip to the District of Columbia is in your travel plans, allocate time to visit the National Zoo. Be sure to have your camera in hand to capture the special moments.   Photograph by Roy Kelley Roy and Dolores Kelley Photographs
