Clematis, a favorite in Kentlands   Many of the homes in the Kentlands neighborhood, in Gaithersburg, Maryland, have white picket fences. Clematis vines and flowers are one of the favorite plants to accent the fences. Clematis flowers are seen in many varieties and colors.  This is one of my favorite colors. Share your clematis photographs in the comments for this blog.   Clematis, Kentlands Photowalk Photograph by Roy Kelley Roy and Dolores Kelley Photographs

Online Dating Scam   I am not at all familiar with online dating practices but will share this notice that was circulated by a Community Service officer at the Gaithersburg Police Department. Kentlands, our home community in Gaithersburg, Maryland has a very active Community Watch Program that circulates scam alerts. Consumers need to alert for scams that seem to be appearing for almost any type of activity. Online Dating Scam Millions of Americans use dating sites and social networking to meet people. Scammers know this, and are using the site to target potential victims.  According to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), scammers will create fake profiles to build online relationships, and eventually convince people to send money in the name of love. Some even make wedding plans before...

Muggy morning flower   We have a hot and muggy morning in Maryland. A thunderstorm watch continues for today. If you wonder why members of congress try to stay away from the District of Columbia  during the summer months, it is not only the political heat.  Stay cool and have a great day. Can you identify this flower?   Photograph by Roy Kelley Roy and Dolores Kelley Photographs

Mood adjusting gazania   We have a stormy night in Maryland and it is a good time to edit a few photographs from my morning photowalks through the neighborhood. I thought you might like this yellow gazania to brighten your reading and your mood. Gazanias add a lot of color to the garden and they are fun to photogaph. Actually, I did not need to walk very far for this photograph since this flower was in our front planter.   Yellow Gazania, Kentlands Photowalk Photograph by Roy Kelley Roy and Dolores Kelley Photographs

Severe Thunderstorm Watch in Maryland: Power Outages Expected   There is a severe thunderstorm watch in effect in Maryland until 8 p.m. Monday night and utility companies are urging residents to be prepared for power outages. Weather forecasts are calling for more storms with strong winds later on Monday that could again knock out electricity. Strong winds cause downed tree limbs that sometimes cause power outages. Storms may produce damaging winds and tornadoes are possible, along with heavy rains and localized flash flooding. The Maryland Emergency Management Agency suggests that during stormy weather residents should have a disaster supply kit with water, non-perishable food, a battery- or crank-operated radio and other necessities in case of an extended power outage. Now is also the...

Two things to aim at in life   Real estate professional Kristin Johnson shared this quote in her Monday morning blog. “There are two things to aim at in life; first to get what you want, and after that to enjoy it. Only the wisest of mankind has achieved the second.” - Logan Pearsall Smith As we review our goals and accomplishments for the first half of this year, it is a good time to consider this quote. We now have what we want because that was part of the plan. However, many of us are not really enjoying it. Let’s resolve to join the wisest of mankind by achieving the second aim of life. Enjoy the summer and treasure every moment spent with those that you love. Goals and Goal Setting Quotations   Have you read these blogs?  I will appreciate your comments. Faux IRS Employee Scam   Fairfax County Police are warning residents about a resurgence of a fake IRS employee scam. Police have received dozens of complaints in recent weeks.  Callers are claiming residents have "overdue tax balances" and that they will be arrested and/or deported immediately if fines are not paid. The scam is sophisticated, and often involves false names, numbers and fake IRS badge numbers. Suspects often continue to call and harass the recipient.  Once money has been wired/sent, it is impossible to recover. What to Look For: •Callers typically demand between $4,000 and 6,000 in "immediate payment of unpaid tax bills." •Some suspects are described as having heavy accents. •The callers use scare tactics. They are demanding, aggressive, threatening and easily angered wh...

Fraudulent Debit Card Telephone Call Scam   An area police department has received several tips about a scam involving fake debit card telephone calls. Victims are receiving automated telephone messages saying that their debit cards have been temporarily disabled and need to be re-activated. The message then instructs listeners to enter their debit card number, PIN and expiration date. What to Look for: •Any phone message that asks you to enter your debit card number OR PIN number. Banks do not solicit debit card information through automated messages. •Any message or phone call requesting personal/financial information be entered electronically. If you suspect you've fallen victim to these messages, contact your bank and request your debit card be canceled and replaced as soon as possi...

Add gazanias for more color in your planter   Gazanias are small flowers with bold colors. We have them in the planter at the front of our home. They close up at night and then open again when the sun is shining. As you can see from the color of this gazania in the bright sun, they will be noticed. And, they are fun to photograph. We have pink, yellow and orange gazanias. Orange is my favorite color for these flowers. They are classified as low maintenance annuals.     Gazania, Kentlands, Gaithersburg, Maryland USA IMG 7899 Photograph by Roy Kelley Roy and Dolores Kelley Photographs

Daylily in our Kentlands home garden   This is a photograph of a daylily in our Kentlands home garden in Gaithersburg, Maryland. We have several different colors of daylilies but one day this past week the number of blooms was dramatically reduced. Evidently, one or more deer enjoyed daylilies for an early morning breakfast. Enjoy the colors of the season with your camera in hand.     Daylily, Kentlands, Gaithersburg, MD IMG 7903 Photograph by Roy Kelley Roy and Dolores Kelley Photographs

Attention Getting Words: Squamous cell carcinoma   This week, I have a four month follow up appointment with the plastic surgeon, Dr. Michael Vincent, who removed a squamous cell carcinoma from my upper lip. I am mentioning this in a blog because summertime activities that are outdoors increase the risk of skin cancer and I want you to take good care of yourself and your family members. I visit my dermatologist on a regular basis at a minimum of every four months for regular check ups. At the list visit, he took a close look at a small place on my upper lip and did a biopsy that resulted in the discovery of skin cancer and the referral to a plastic surgeon. Be very aware of damage that can be caused by sun or tanning bed exposure. Use sun block and lip protection every day. There is no ...

ActiveRain MeetUp with Rob Thomas   Dolores and I were delighted to hear that Rob and Aimee Thomas would be traveling from from Bristol, Virginia to meet us in Gaithersburg, Maryland. Rob is the top agent in his market and his very busy schedule allowed only a short visit. They had a 300 mile, six hour trip to get here. Thankfully, most of the drive was on Interstate highways through the beautiful countryside of Virginia and Maryland. The photographs were taken at Romano's Macaroni Grill in Gaithersburg where we enjoyed dinner and our first evening together. We have invited them to visit again and to join us for a visit to Longwood Gardens. It is a special experience to meet bloggers that you have known for years on ActiveRain but are getting together in person for the first time.  If y...
