Best Bett Dahlias for your home garden   Dahlias tend to grow very well in Montgomery County, Maryland.  You have to be careful with your plant selection because many dahlias grow tall and need to be staked. One of my favorites that does not need to be staked is the Best Bett dahlia that is also known as Mystic Sprit or Mystic Series. The blooms are in the pastel color of peach or apricot and the leaves of the bushy plant provide a lovely background for the flowers. These plants grow from 26” to 31” tall and 20” to 26” wide. It is now time to plant dahlias in our area and you will enjoy flowers from July until October. Enjoy your home gardens and the colors of the season.  Go to this Best Bett link for more information.     Dahlias, Best Bett, Longwood Gardens IMG_7442 Photograph by Roy...

Book Recommendation:  The Walnut Tree by Charles Todd   I just finished reading The Walnut Tree (2012) by Charles Todd. This is a holiday tale by the New York Times bestselling author of the Inspector Ian Rutledge mysteries and the Bess Crawford mysteries. A mother and son writing team, they live in Delaware and North Carolina. Dolores and I have read all of the wonderful Charles Todd novels. The main character of this book is Lady Elspeth Douglas and the time frame is the beginning of the World War in 1914. Lady Elspeth finds herself in Paris as the German army approaches. She resists the advice to return to England and ends up abandoning her aristocratic world and trains as a nurse. Yes, this is a love story in the midst of the horror of war. I recommend this book as well as the Ian R...

Can you identify the old cars in the family pictures?   Over the Mother’s Day weekend, I enjoyed taking a look at some of the old family photographs. This is a photograph of my mother posing next to my father's car. This would probably have been in the 1930's some time before they were married in 1936. My mother, Madge Roberts Kelley, was born in June, 1914, in Portsmouth, Virginia. My father was John J. Kelley. They lived in Portsmouth for their entire married life. Save those family photographs because they will be of great interest to future generations.   Do you know the model and year of this automobile?

The most unwanted flower   You probably have not given a lot of thought to the topic of your most unwanted flower. However, in many areas, dandelions are providing a lot of color to suburban lawns and home owners are trying to find a way to eliminate them. Before you dig up your dandelions, take a little time to look closely to enjoy their beauty and maybe even take a photograph or two. Enjoy your spring lawn care and gardening!      Dandelion, Spring Photowalk, Kentlands, Gaithersburg, MD IMG 5966 Photograph by Roy Kelley Roy and Dolores Kelley Photographs

Older Americans Carrying More Mortgage Debt This information should encourage every family to do everything that they can to pay off their mortgage debt before retirement if they will be living on a fixed income. What’s blooming in your neighborhood?   Nothing beats getting out and walking about to see what is going on in our communities. Put on your walking shoes and grab your camera and you will be ready to do a little photowalking. You might just meet some neighbors or contractors doing spring work. While you are out, photograph the flowers and blossoms that are providing the colors of spring. In Maryland, the long and severe winter certainly impacted the plants and flowers. I do not think our camellias will be blooming this season even though they were load with hundreds of buds. When you take your photographs of flowers and blossoms, include them in your blogs. Your prospects and your clients do love the spring colors. The snapshots in this blog were taken in Kentlands. For out of the area ...

Book Recommendation: The Edge by Catherine Coulter   I just finished reading The Edge (1999) by Catherine Coulter. This novel is one of the 18 books in her FBI Thriller Series. We picked up this new book at one of our favorite thrift shops to try the author. I enjoyed the book and will add the others to our list to obtain from the library. This novel features FBI agent Ford “Mac” MacDougal as he investigates an incident that involved his sister Jilly running her Porsche off an Oregon cliff. There is plenty of action to maintain your interest. Read a good book this week for your personal enjoyment.     Spring Blossoms in Kentlands IMG 6096 Photograph by Roy Kelley Roy and Dolores Kelley Photographs
