Thinking about dahlias in Kentlands   We are thinking about upgrading our home security system and met with a security consultant today but it is now Monday night in Kentlands so I will save that topic for another blog. The cold weather ended our growing season last week which means that there will be no more beautiful dahlias in our home garden this season. I would rather think about dahlias than security systems. And, I bet you might prefer a pretty flower rather than another real estate blog. This bloom was one of the last for the season. You can see the changing colors of the dogwood leaves in the background. Have an outstanding week!     Dahlia, Kentlands IMG_1998 Photograph by Roy Kelley Roy and Dolores Kelley Photographs

Final week for the Longwood Gardens Chrysanthemum Festival   Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania is one of our favorite travel destinations to see beautiful gardens and photograph flowers. For us, it is close enough for a day trip. The location is just west of Wilmington, Delaware.  We try to attend all of the major annual exhibits. The annual Chrysanthemum Festival at Longwood Gardens is an outstanding exhibit of over 20,000 blooming chrysanthemums. This is a world class facility and the plants are nurtured and trained by horticulture experts. This is the final week for the Chrysanthemum Festival and the exhibit may be viewed through Sunday, November 24, 2013. The conservatory is one of the largest you will ever see and there are thousands of other plants and flowers in ad...

End of the season Dahlia for you   The dahlias in our Kentlands home garden were frozen this week and that ended the season. I cut down the dahlia plants to be recycled.  Fortunately, I took plenty of photographs and will be able to share some of them with you during the colder months ahead. The dahlia in this photograph was one of the last of the season in our home garden. Enjoy the weekend and have an outstanding new week during this season of Thanksgiving.  Enjoy the colors of the season. Life is better when there are flowers to photograph.   Dahlia, Kentlands IMG_0226 Photograph by Roy Kelley Roy and Dolores Kelley Photograph

Why you need personal powers of attorney for your family in Maryland   We received this email from our friend Lynn Caudle Boynton and I thought it would be a good idea to share it with our friends and clients in Maryland. If you live in another state, you may wish to check on the requirements for powers of attorney to represent a family member or close friend.    WHY I AM PREPARING FREE POWERS OF MEDICAL AND STATUTORY GENERAL POWERS OF ATTORNEY….. Many people associate the need for medical and financial powers of attorney with being elderly or infirm, when the bottom line is, no one can consent or act on behalf of another person if they are over 18 years of age, including spouses and children.  Therefore, if your child was in a car accident and could not speak for themselves, you could ...

Book Recommendation:  The Cat Dancers by P.T. Deutermann   Those that follow my blogs know that I enjoy reading suspense novels. When I discover an author that I really enjoy, I will sometimes try to read many or all of the books written by that writer. I just finished reading The Cat Dancers  (2005), a novel by P.T. Deutermann and recommend that you add his books to your reading list. This is one of Deutermann’s Cam Richter books. Cam Richter is an investigator following up on a murder investigation. The setting is North Carolina. P.T. Deutermann is a graduate of the Naval Academy and is a retired Navy captain. His suspense novels are very well written and I am sure that you will enjoy them. One of my personal goals is to read at least one novel each week. Read a good book this week an...

Marketing Ideas For Montgomery County, MD  Homes   One of the ways that I help my realtor partners and clients is to provide single property websites to help to get more eyes on a property and hopefully the right buyer!  It's a great marketing piece that really WOW's sellers! One such client is selling a 5 bedroom, 3 bath property in Laytonsville, Maryland.  Laytonsville is a lovely suburb of Washington, DC, in Montgomery County, Maryland, near Gaithersburg. Check out this beautiful home at the property's web site!   http://20620farcroft.StopTheCarHoney.com   A little Laytonsville trivia...Did you know that Laytonsville used to be called Cracklintown?  When I asked the seller what made her home special, she provided me with the following:    My husband moved to Maryland in January 2004,...

Book Recommendation:  How The Light Gets In by Louise Penny   I just finished reading How The Light Gets In (2013) by Louise Penny. This is A Chief Inspector Gamache Novel. This suspense novel ranked  #1 on the New York Times bestseller list. This is the ninth novel in this series. After you read this book, you will want to read the others. Quebec is the setting of this story that features the Chief Inspector in the Homicide Department of Sûreté de Québec. The book is named after an excerpt from the Leonard Cohen poem/song Anthem. Ring the bells that still can ring, Forget your perfect offering, There’s a crack in everything. That’s how the light gets in. Enjoy a good book this week and share information on your favorite authors and your favorite books. I try to read a minimum of a book...

Day trip to Westminster, Maryland   We had a beautiful Saturday in Maryland. Dolores and I took a day trip to Westminster, in Carroll County.  We enjoyed the Carroll County Farmers Market at the Agricultural Center. As usual, we sampled the good food and enjoyed the hand made crafts. Some of the photography on display was outstanding. Jo Morrison, playing the Celtic Harp, provided a special treat. We decided to have lunch at the farmers market and our selection was the Emu Chili which was outstanding. The link may not take you to the recipe that was used today but this is one that was published by the American Emu Association. After lunch, we went to the White Rabbit Thrift Shop at the Carroll County Medical Center. We purchased a basket full of books from the very nice ladies that volu...

Book Recommendation:  The Quest by Nelson DeMille   Those of you that follow my blogs know that I enjoy reading suspense novels and have a personal goal to read at least one novel each week. I just finished reading The Quest (2013) by Nelson DeMille and recommend this book for your reading list. This stand- alone book is a rewrite of his 1975 novel with the same title. Much of the story takes place in Italy but the most exciting action is during the Ethiopian Civil War as the main characters report on the action, become part of action and embark on a live changing quest. Nelson DeMille is well known for his six books in his Joe Ryker series, two novels in his John Sutter series, three books in his Paul Brenner series and seven books in his more recent John Corey series. The Quest was th...
