Summertime Reading:  The Columbus Affair by Steve Berry   I just finished reading The Columbus Affair (2012) by New York Times Bestselling Author Steve Berry. This is most recent of his stand alone books which include The Amber Room (2003), The Romanov Prophecy (2004) and The Third Secret (2005).  I suggest any or all of these books for your summertime reading pleasure. Short sale transactions require the approval of the secured mortgage lenders since the proceeds of a sale would not fully satisfy the mortgage obligations. During June, 2013, the total sold dollar volume of residential properties in Montgomery County, Maryland was $677,083,210, up 27.46% from the same month last year. Life expectancy   Today’s issue of The Washington Post has a very interesting article, by Patricia Sullivan, on “The State of U.S. Health, 1990-2010” which was published by the Journal of the American Medical Association this week.  Sullivan reports that Americans born in 2010 may expect “to live 78.2 years, up from 75.2 years in 1980.” The report shows Montgomery County, Maryland and Fairfax County, Virginia among the areas with the highest life expectancy.  Men may expect to live 81.67 years and women may expect to live 84.87 years in Montgomery County. Housing Trends for the DC Metro Area, June, 2013  During June, 2013, there were 5,237 settlements of homes sold in the DC Metro Area. This represents a 12.3% increase from the same month last year. The median sales price was $440,000, up 10%. There were 5,434 pending sales, up 6.8%. Active listings totaled 8,281, down 20.2%. The good news was that new listings were up 10.6% to a total of 6,180 homes.  9 days was the median time on the market (DOM). Gaithersburg raccoon tests positive for rabies   A Gaithersburg raccoon lost a battle with two neighborhood dogs on East Deer Park Drive. The body was picked up by Gaithersburg Animal Control and tested positive for rabies. This is serious because the rabies virus can be fatal. Fortunately, the two dogs had up to date rabies vaccinations.  Individuals that have had any contact with a raccoon should immediately contact the Montgomery County Health Department at 240-777-1755.  Anyone with a pet that has come into contact with a raccoon should call Gaithersburg Animal Control at 301-258-6343. Pet owners are reminded to make sure that their pets have current rabies shots. This is a good topic for family discussions. Happy Birthday to Dolores Kelley!   Today is my wife’s birthday and she has been kind enough to identify items that are appropriate gifts for her special day. Dolores and I celebrated our 48th wedding anniversary in June and I am very lucky to be married to the best wife in the world. We spent yesterday at Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania. This is one of our favorite day trip destinations. We took several hundred photographs of the beautiful flowers. Today, Dolores is having lunch and playing cards with her friends at Montgomery Country Club.  Life is good when you have the right partner. Enjoying Maryland Flowers on Photowalks in Kentlands   We have a beautiful sunny day in Maryland. Since some of us have enjoyed too much good food over the holiday weekend, it is a good time to do some walking.  Add a camera to the walks and you are ready for photwalking through the community. Photowalking in the Neighborhood:  Kentlands Flowers   We had a lot of rain in June, over 10 inches. So, all of our greenery has grown more rapidly than usual. The flowers in Kentlands have also enjoyed the extra moisture. As I photowalk through the neighborhood, I enjoy photographing the flowers that are in bloom. Walking is good exercise and it is easy to set aside the problems of the day as I focus my attention and my camera on a beautiful flower. This is a sampling of recent photographs. For your summer reading list:  “Frozen In Time”   I just finished reading the latest book by Mitchell Zuckoff, “Frozen In Time” (2013) and suggest that you add this title to your summer reading list. This is a true story of survival after plane crashes in Greenland during World War II and the modern efforts to return the lost airmen. You will enjoy this book.
