Ready for snow in Maryland We had about an inch of snow this morning and clearing the walks and driveway was not difficult work.  However, it is very cold and much more snow is predicted for tomorrow. These photographs are from a previous season and remind us of the challenges and the beauty of deep snow in Kentlands, in Gaithersburg, Maryland. Be prepared and put safety first as we face more severe winter weather.  Be sure to have your camera in hand to capture the special moments. Expecting snow in Maryland It is very cold in Maryland.  Snow is predicted for tonight.  The morning rush  hour may be a difficult time in the metro area of Washington, DC.  Be very careful if you have to be on the road.  A better idea to stay home and read a good book as you sit by the fireplace. Always have your camera in hand to capture those special moments as you are out and about in your community and your travels. Cleaning An Egged Car    Every now and then cars in our neighborhood have been egged.  So, many have asked how to remove the eggs. Ted Blitgen provided these tips for his Kentlands neighbors A solution for removing the egg:If you've ever been victimized by neighborhood pranksters or vandalism, you've likely had your car egged. While discovering an egged car is nerve racking, trying to remove the egg and yolk creates further irritation. The key is to remove the egg stain shortly after the incident. However, if the egging occurred overnight, or while you were out of town, the yolk will crust, making removal twice and hard. Here are a few tips for removing egg from cars, without ruining the paint. Step 1: If possible, do not allow the egg to sit on the car for an extended period, especiall...

Skating Prohibited on the Kentlands and Lakelands Lakes The frozen lakes may look inviting, but please do not attempt to play or skate on any of the lakes in Kentlands and Lakelands.  The ice could give way and you would fall into freezing water!  If this were to happen, it could prove fatal before rescuers could reach the scene.  Talk to your children about the extreme danger of playing on the ice or the rocks surrounding the lakes. Even though the ice looks stable, our lakes double as a storm drainage network. This means that the level of water under the ice may be lowering.  In addition, the water is constantly moving under the ice, thus further contributing to a very dangerous environment.  An adult can lose motor skills within a minute of being in freezing water and it's even faste...

Holiday Party with the du Ponts at Longwood Gardens   Christmas celebrations at Longwood Gardens date back to December 23, 1921.  A Longwood Christmas is an annual exhibit that celebrates the holidays with beautiful floral exhibits. Imagine an invitation to a holiday party hosted by Mr. and Mrs. Peirce du Pont.  The ladies would be wearing their latest gowns from Paris.  The table in this photograph is 64 feet long.  The table decorations are preserved roses, vases of winter flowering begonia, white moth orchid hybrid, brake fern and silver willow branches.  The building is the Conservatory at Longwood Gardens. Dolores and I love our visits to Longwood Gardens, in Kennett Square, PA at any time of the year.  A Longwood Christmas changes each year and is an exhibit that you will want to ...

Lion, National Zoo, Washington DC It was a beautiful day in Maryland so Dolores and I drove into Washington, DC to the National Zoo to enjoy the exhibits and take a few photographs.  The National Zoo is about 21 miles from our home in the Kentlands area of Gaithersburg.  Well, you can't go to the zoo without seeking out the lions.  The were enjoying the unusually mild November weather. Normally, we photograph flowers.  So, it was fun to focus on the animals for the afternoon.  We highly recommend a visit to the National Zoo when you are in the area. The admission is free but there is a fee for parking.    Photograph by Roy Kelley using a Canon PowerShot G11 camera. Roy and Dolores Kelley Photographs

Up Close and Personal: Hairy Cell Leukemia On Wednesday, I had my regular six month appointment at The Center For Cancer and Blood Disorders.  My physician, Dr. Ralph Boccia, is a nationally recognized expert on cancer and blood disorders.  The background for this story began in the 1900’s.  The exact time is uncertain.  Like many real estate professionals, I was working seven days a week with very long hours every day.  Business was good and I was up to the challenge.  However, I had symptoms that indicated that something was wrong with my health.  Fatigue was the thing that bothered me the most, but I maintained my regular schedule. Several doctors provided theories on what might be causing abnormal blood counts.  Finally, my internist referred me to Dr. Boccia.  And, he was determine...
