Maryland Summer Flowers: Kentlands Photowalking Walking through the neighborhood is good exercise.  Having a camera in hand adds interest to the importance of exercise.  Kentlands, our home community in Gaithersburg, Maryland, is designed for walking and the beauty of the homes and gardens provides a perfect combination for photowalks. Be sure to step away from your computer on a regular basis and get some exercise for good health.  It is easy to put aside the problems of the moment when you are focusing your camera on a beautiful flower. Photowalking in Maryland:  Kentlands Flowers   We enjoyed a beautiful day in Maryland.  A two hour photowalk through Kentlands and Lakelands, beginning at 6 a.m., was a good way to start the day.  The birds were singing, the geese were honking and the rabbits were hopping to celebrate the morning.  Dolores and the ladies in the Red Hat Society visited a Civil War museum in Frederick, Maryland and had a delightful luncheon.  They were outfitted in purple and red.   Take time to walk through your neighborhood and enjoy the summer gardens.  It is easy to set aside the issues of the moment when you are focusing your attention on a beautiful flower.      Daylily, Kentlands, Flowers IMG_2851 Inticancha Navajo Princess Lily, Kentlands, Flowers IMG_2859 Coneflowers, Kentlands, Flowers IMG_2863 ...

When you go on vacation… We received this email from our friends at Olde Key Title in Maryland. The article titled “Anti-Hacking Packing”, written by Sid Kirchheimer and published in the AARP Bulletin, provides helpful tips for when you go on vacation, to reduce the risk of identity theft.  These tips are: “Alert your credit card providers.” Before you go on vacation, call your credit card companies and inform them of when and where you will be going on vacation. “Stop your mail.” Either stop your mail completely or have a neighbor collect your mail while you are gone.  You do not want your mail, especially bank statements and the like, piling up. “Weed out your wallet.” Only take with you the necessities (in your wallet), such as some cash, a few credit cards, and a driver’s license. “...

Americans Stay Alert to Ageism A South Florida senior citizen, 81 years young and healthy, was not allowed to adopt two Chihuahua puppies because of his "advanced age." This story on the Internet is just one example of ageism–discrimination against people on the grounds of age. It is a basic denial of older people's human rights. Robert N. Butler, M.D., a gerontologist, psychiatrist, and winner of a Pulitzer Prize, coined the term in 1968. He also founded the National Institute on Aging and led the International Longevity Center USA (ILC). A 2006 ILC report, "Ageism in America,” describes experiences of older Americans: "widespread mistreatment, ranging from stereotyping and degrading media images to physical and financial abuse, unequal treatment in the workforce, and denial of appropr...

Emerald Ash Borer Killing Ash Trees   The Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) is a wood-boring insect that only kills Ash trees.  It is not harmful to pets or humans.  It is a species from Asia, introduced most likely through wood-packing materials.  The EAB has recently been discovered in Ash trees just outside the City limits.  Gaithersburg is being proactive in treating its healthy Ash trees now to ward off an EAB infestation and save its trees. What Does the Borer Do? The EAB is only destructive in the larval stage.  In its adult beetle form, it poses no threat.  The larvae eat the cambium layer of the tree in a zigzag pattern, disrupting the tree’s ability to transport water and nutrients.  It only takes 30% damage for the tree to be killed, which can happen quite quickly.  While the tree mig...
