Colors of Autumn in Colonial Williamsburg The holiday decorations in Colonial Williamsburg will always get your attention. They are are made from natural materials and follow traditional designs of the 18th century. Preparing the decorations is an all year long effort and they are refreshed daily between Thanksgiving and New Year's. More dried arrangements are used in locations with lots of sun and fresh materials are used more on the shady sides of the streets. Squirrels and birds are alert for the new materials.  Please share photographs from your favorite locations in the comments for this post.  Best wishes to all for a Very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!  Colors of Autumn in Colonial Williamsburg IMG_1420 Photograph by Roy Kelley Roy and Dolores Kelley Photographs

The Last Roses of Autumn in Kentlands When I walk through our Kentlands community in Montgomery County, Maryland, I seek the colors of the season with my camera in hand.  As we approach the official beginning of winter, the days are getting colder and there are fewer and fewer remaining flowers to enjoy and photograph.  There are a few roses that still look good and I am sharing some of those pictures with you. Please share photographs from your favorite places in the comments for this post.  Enjoy the holidays and be certain to have your camera in hand for those special moments. Autumn Colors in Kentlands I enjoy regular walks through Kentlands and Lakelands in Montgomery County, Maryland. These neo-traditional communities are designed for walking.  With my camera in hand, I seek the colors of the season.  In mid-December, most of the flowers have faded and there are other colors and images to enjoy.  Those that are considering areas in which to purchase a home should take time to do some walking through the areas to see if the neighborhood meets the family expectations. Please share photographs from your favorite places in the comments for this post. Enjoy the holidays and be sure to have your camera in hand to capture those special moments. Kentlands Stalker:  Neighborhood Cat Guilty or Innocent? I enjoy walking through our home community of Kentlands in Gaithersburg, Maryland.  With camera in hand, I attempt to capture the colors of the season.  During a recent walk, I noticed a neighborhood cat stalking a fat squirrel.  As I approached, the cat sat on the sidewalk as if nothing was taking place the moment before. I will leave it to you.  Is this a guilty or innocent appearance? Enjoy the holidays and be sure to have your camera in hand for those special moments.  You may have an unexpected encounter with a new furry friend.      Cat in Kentlands IMG_2562 Photograph by Roy Kelley using a Canon PowerShot G11 camera. Cactus Flowers are Blooming in Montgomery County, Maryland Dolores and I were on the Countryside Artisan's 2011 Holiday Studio tour when I noticed these flowers in the window of Art of Fire, an art glass studio in Laytonsville, Maryland. This studio has some of the most beautiful glass artwork that you will find in Maryland.  The flowers are a bonus. Enjoy the holidays and be sure to support local artisans and local businesses. Coconut Cake, A Sweet Fixation In Kentlands The Cooking & Eating section of today’s issue of The Wall Street Journal includes an article titled THE OBSESSION: COCONUT CAKE. The Obsessor is Roseanne Cash, the Grammy winning musician.  "I never met one I didn't like," said Rosanne Cash, daughter of Johnny, and herself a Grammy-winning musician. "I'd happily compare every coconut cake in the universe from now until death in hopes of finding the perfect one…if I didn't already know the three best recipes in the world." – Charlotte Druckman Her favorite recipe is Carrie’s Coconut Cake. Coconut cake is one of my favorites.  I always have fond childhood memories of my Mother cracking and grating fresh coconuts for her wonderful cakes and pies.  These desserts probably were one of the reasons t...

Have you read “Unbroken”? I try to read an average of a book a week.  Fortunately, my wife Dolores keeps me supplied with great books.  Recently, Dolores read “Unbroken” (2010) by Laura Hillenbrand and suggested it to me.  It is an excellent book, and I recommend it for your holiday reading list. “#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER hailed by TIME magazine as the best nonfiction book of the year. “STAGGERING … MESMERIZING … Any one of the threads in Hillenbrand’s monumental new book could be a page-turner all its own… Hillenbrand’s writing is so ferociously cinematic, the events she describes so incredible, you don’t dare take your eyes off the page.”–People On a May afternoon in 1943, an Army Air Forces bomber crashed into the Pacific Ocean and disappeared, leaving only a spray of debris and ...

Orange Mincemeat Squares With just weeks to make the decision, we continue with the question of what kind of cookies should be left for Santa on Christmas Eve.  We want to make sure that Santa will be pleased and a taste test is the best way to decide.  Also, there are good reasons to practice an important recipe. It is time to prepare and test Orange Mincemeat Squares.  The Food editors at The Washington Post advise us that these are low fat cookies that can be stored up to a week and frozen for up to three months.  Maybe, we should fix several batches for the winter months. Try this recipe and share the results with us.  Will Santa like these cookies? Enjoy the Christmas holiday season and be sure to have your camera in hand to capture those special moments.  Please share your recipes...

Follow Your Passion On Saturday, Dolores and I attended the annual Holiday Gift Mart at the First Baptist Church in Gaithersburg, Maryland. This is a large show and much local talent is on display.  We were delighted to see Burt Lancaster and his wife Carolyn at one of the exhibits.  Burt is a long time real estate professional at RE/MAX Realty Group.  Carolyn makes holiday wreaths and decorations that they sell at local craft events. Carolyn explained that she has been making decorations for years for family members.  They encouraged her to make her talents available to the public and a new small business was born.  We selected one of her wreaths to hang on our front door at home. This is a good lesson for all of us to follow our passions and to do work that we really enjoy.  Burt like...

Chocolate-Chocolate Chip Pistachio Apricot Cookies One of the important questions at this time of the year is to decide what type of cookies to leave for Santa on Christmas Eve.  Everybody seems to have their own ideas as to which cookies will be Santa’s favorites.  The prudent thing for us to do is to have taste tests before the final selection. Much assistance has been provided by the Food editors at The Washington Post.  The Sunday edition included a number of recipes for our consideration. I am willing to taste test the Chocolate-Chocolate Chip Pistachio Apricot Cookies to determine if they should be among the finalists.    Join us in this decision making process.  Try the recipe and let us know what you think. Please share your holiday recipes and photographs from your favorite pla...

I love coconut and chocolate so how could anyone go wrong by baking Double Chocolate Coconut Cookies. Give the recipe a try and let me know if you enjoy the cookies!  You may wish to leave a plate of these cookies and a big glass of milk for Santa. Please share your cookie recipes or photographs from your favorite places in the comments for this post. Holiday Wreath IMG_1379 Colonial Williamsburg on Thanksgiving Day.  Photograph by Roy Kelley.
