Dolores and I always enjoy the dahlias in Kentlands, our home community. Have a wonderful week as we continue with the challenges of the new year. Winterthur Museum Collection - Roy and Dolores Kelley Photographs Yuletide at Winterthur is the current theme for visitors at Winterthur in Wilmington, Delaware.  This weekend is the last opportunity to see this very special holiday exhibit.  The mansion is beautiful and the tours change during the year so there are always new things to see.  Travelers come from all over the world to see the museum collection. “Winterthur’s unparalleled collection of nearly 90,000 objects features decorative and fine arts made or used in America from 1630 to 1860. The collection is organized in several main categories— ceramics, glass, furniture, metalwork, paintings and prints, and textiles and needlework. Yuletide at Winterthur  Yuletide at Winterthur is one of the very special places that Dolores and I toured during the holidays.   Winterthur is the former home of Henry Francis du Pont.  The house, museum and grounds are beautiful and this is a great travel destination. The location is Wilmington, Delaware.  The Winterthur at Yuletide tours are available through January 8th and we recommend a visit if you are going to be in the area. Many try to see Winterthur and the nearby Longwood Gardens on the same visit.  It would really be a full day to combine both destinations.  I recommend a day for each.  By the way, this is mushroom country so be sure to try the mushroom soup at either location for a special lunchtime treat. Hundreds of Families Helped During December Holidays    Thanks to the generosity of the entire community, nearly 800 Gaithersburg families received donations to help make their holidays a little happier this season.  Donations are coordinated through the City’s Holiday Giving program, with referrals being made to the City’s Community Services division from area schools and nonprofit counselors.  The program operates in tandem with the countywide Holiday Giving Program to ensure non-duplication of services and efficient use of resources. The Countywide effort is coordinated by the nonprofit organization A Wider Circle, through a grant from Montgomery County government.  Hundreds of volunteers, businesses, organizations and nonprofits joined efforts to ensure that all who were referred r...

Longwood Gardens  - Roy and Dolores Kelley Photographs 1/2/12 If you follow my ActiveRain blog posts, you know that Dolores and I love to visit Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania.  The location is just west of Wilmington, Delaware in eastern Pennsylvania.  This is close enough to our home in Montgomery County, Maryland for day trips at any time of the year. The current exhibit is A Longwood Christmas and it is fun to see, enjoy and photograph the seasonal images.  However, the Conservatory has a very wide variety of plants and flowers.  This post will be a random selection of some of the less typical images. Orchid House at Longwood Gardens At this time of the year, families travel to Longwood Gardens to see the annual display A Longwood Christmas.  However, there are other garden treasures to be found during your visit.  At any time of the year, Dolores and I enjoy spending some time in the Orchid House which is a section of the very large Conservatory.  Follow the Acacia Passage from the Orangery to the Orchid House for very special experience. "This room houses the best of Longwood’s more than 3,200 different types of orchids. At any one time approximately 200 to 500 plants at peak bloom add color and scent the air. Ferns, ivies, and peace lilies (Spathiphyllum) provide a green backdrop for the myriad of blossoms." Please share photographs from your favorite places in the comments for th...

Kentlands in December 12/23/11 I always enjoy walks through our home community of Kentlands in Gaithersburg, Maryland. Holiday decorations are up and the colors of the season are rapidly changing. We always advise our prospective home buyers to take time to walk through their areas of interest to learn more about the neighborhoods. Kentlands is a neo-traditional community in Gaithersburg, Maryland. It is designed for convenience and is ideal for walks through the community and to nearby shopping and restaurants.  Convenience adds much to the quality of life in an area. Kentlands in December We always advise home buyer clients to take walks through the neighborhoods they are considering for their home purchase.  It is a good way to see what is offered in the area and it is a good way to meet neighbors. We live and work in an ideal community in the Maryland suburbs of Washington, DC.  Gaithersburg is an unusual city in that it is debt free and the city provides high quality services to the residents. Our Kentlands neighborhood has a neo-traditional design that is ideal for walking.  Lighted sidewalks line both sides of the streets and the homes and gardens are lovely.  Shopping and great restaurants are within easy walking distances.  You can understand why I enjoy daily walks through Kentlands and the adjacent community of Lakelands.  The photographs i...
