Free Virtual Six-Week Diabetes Management Program The Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services’ Public Health Services, in partnership with the Maryland Living Well Center of Excellence, will offer a free community-based Diabetes Self-Management Program (DSMP) beginning Thursday, Feb. 22. The six-week program will be held virtually from 5:30-7:30 p.m. each Thursday.The DSMP was created at Stanford University and is a nationally recognized diabetes prevention and management program. The program provides education on the physical aspect of managing diabetes and the emotional aspect. MCPL MoComCon Rescheduled The eighth annual Montgomery County Public Libraries free comic convention, MoComCon, which was originally scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 20, in Germantown, has been rescheduled for 10 a.m.-5 p.m. on Saturday, March 2. Free Online Arts Salon  Painter Bob Ross once said, "There are no mistakes . . . just happy accidents." On Tuesday, Jan. 30, Silver Spring Town Center, Inc. will embrace that theme as it presents its free online Winter Arts Salon: Happy Accidents. The event, from 7-8:30 p.m., will explore creative works that emerged without intention--as a surprise of sorts. The quarterly salon will be hosted by the husband and wife team of Richard Hall and Simone Fary from Nerds Make Media. The arts salon is designed for those along the creative spectrum, including artists, writers, filmmakers, musicians, designers, songwriters, photographers, film makers costume designers and poets. Because of your generosity, we served 473 families and 31 individuals in November and 582 families, 1,237 children, and 58 individuals in December. Cicadas To Emerge This Spring In Many States Billions of periodical cicadas from two broods, including a 13-year brood in Maryland, will emerge this spring in a rare, synchronized event that hasn’t happened since 1803. It will be an especially noisy spring in Illinois, with emergences of both the 17-year cicadas in Brood XIII, known as the Northern Illinois Brood, and the 13-year cicadas in Brood XIX, the Great Southern Brood. A tiny bit of southeast Iowa will also see both broods. Brood XIII cicadas also appear in Wisconsin, Indiana, Ohio and a bit of Michigan. City Launches Homeowner Repair Program The City is partnering with Rebuilding Together Montgomery County (RTMC) to provide free home repair services to income-eligible City residents. If you live in the City, meet the income requirements, and own a home, you may qualify.
